ممكن لو الرواية لأي كاتب غير د.يوسف زيدان ..كنت قولت رائعة جدا بس دايما بتوقع معلومات من رواية يوسف زيدان ..خلصت الحياة الاولي والتانية ومالقتش غير وصف لمكان ما في مصر ووصف الصحراء والرحلة الشاقة..قولت ممكن تكون المعلومة فالحياة التالتة بس مكانتش بالقدر اللي توقعته ..هوا وضح ايه اللي فرق النبطين ووزعهم الاسلام لنواحي مختلفة زي مصر والشام واليمن .. كنت حضرت مناقشة الرواية فالساقية وكان واحد سأله ايه الهدف من الرواية قال د.يوسف زيدان ان هدفه من الرواية قراءة التاريخ بصورة مختلفة..حاولت اوصل للصورة دي مش بالقدر اللي اشبعني زي عزازيل اما بالنسبة لتسمية الرواية بالنبطي ..رغم انه مش بطل الرواية او الراوي ليها .. لأن الهدف الاساسي من الرواية هي حياة النبطيين اللي هوا واحد منهم له مكانته وسطهم

This book was a delightful read. About a small Northwestern coastal town that is conglomeration of all the Pacific Northwest coastal villages I have been to, with a healthy dose of Irish culture thrown is as well. The book has some beautiful narrative threads: following Worried Man, who can feel other people's pain and Ceder, an older gent who was born out of the Mink River, or at least came to on its banks after Worried Man rescued him, through their various projects as heads of the Department of Public Works. The idea of story-telling and the story as metaphor for the wonderful twists and turns of life is a prevelant plot throughout the book. It makes perfect sense, given that the two cultures Doyle explores in the book, that of the coastal tribes and Irish settlers, have cultures that are immersed in the power and significance of stories. It would be wrong of me to say that Cedar and Worried Man are the main characters of the book, the novel is, after all, an exploration of an entire coastal town, and as such, it highlights many characters, both human and animal, that share the area. Doyle has done his research on coastal flora and fauna and his descriptions of the natural areas match his beautiful prose. I really enjoyed some of the structural techniques, paragraphs that are point-of-view scenarios split between two characters, alternating sentences capturing each character's point-of-view. Short chapters that explore ideas: every sound that is occurring in the town simultaneously; descriptions of the different habits of Northwest woods; how animals talk to each other in their own languages. Doyle is obviously a Catholic but some of the rituals he describes are quite a beautiful and he doesn't limit himself to this point of view. A fascinating exploration of Northwest Life and it was great to read during the midst of a turmoil within my own life. I was starting to lose hope with Oregon, feeling like maybe all the people headed to California had the right idea. But this novel brought me back to an appreciation of the wonderful culture and natural landscape that make Oregon beautiful.

Interesting perspective from someone who was institutionalized for 18 months in 1967 when the general attitude of someone with a mental disorder was quite different than recent times. I didn't realize that the movie was based on a true story. I remember not really liking the movie but the real characters in the book were much more appealing.

I never thought I would have laughed so hard at a book about evolution, but this story is told in such a humorous way and some of the illustrations are so silly that I found it hard to keep a straight face. The scene where the dodo bird tells the other dodo bird, "You are perfect, don't ever change" is one of my favorite jokes in the book. The information itself is also fascinating. I kept setting the book aside to look up images of the Great Moa Bird or to watch a clip of David Attenbourg with Bower Birds. I will admit that my eyes glazed over during the first couple of chapters that deal with the pre-cambrian period, but I think this would be a useful tool for biology teachers and students. Having not read the first book, I was confused about who the narrators were. I wish there had been a better introduction to who Floorish and Bloort were. I'm not sure that most teens would willingly pick this up for leisure reading, but it's a great way to learn more about this area of science while having a good laugh in the meantime!

"American Pastoral" is why I read. It is as close to perfect that a novel can be for me. The best literature always places characters in historical context, without making them direct actors in the historical process. The story of the Levovs is an American story...not solely Jewish. The story of the Swede and his undoing (though is he really undone?) reaches across religious, economic and racial lines and gets to the heart of everything we lve for...our families. Swede Levov is a complex character. Even though he is almost too moral and upstanding as to be caricatural, he is genuine in everything he does. While Mr. Roth sometimes makes him outright simple, his motivations are so empathetic to us, that we forgive him his simpleness. At the heart of the pastoral is also a story of the 60s. While not a person who has witnessed this period, I've rarely met literature that captures its confusion as vividly. I truly believe this confusion to be real. "American Pastoral" does what all literature should strive to do: offer us a piece of an epoch with characters that are as real as possible. What distinguishes it most of all is the fact that it does strive for something...
