4.5 stars The one thing I appreciate about any author is ability to learn and improve with every book. It seems to me that Chris Carter is one of those authors. From the awkward first book (especially in terms of language and pretty jarring omniscient POV), in every way better The Executioner to, finally The Night Stalker - each book was better than the last. Things that were better: - Robert Hunter is finally a human being. While he is still exceptional investigator of ultra violent (UV) crimes, he has the right match in Garcia and Whitney Myers. He gets frustrated, case weights on his mind. Not to mention that his ass was handed to him at the end of the novel and he had to be saved by someone else. His character has more depth now as we learn more about his traumas and longings. I hope that this will continue as the series progresses. - The secondary characters were better developed. Garcia, who was cartoonishly clueless in the first novel (which was ridiculous even for a rookie), evolved into competent investigator that is a very good match for Robert. Captain Blake still needs some work, in my opinion, but she certainly proved she is a cop. - The writing is, again, smoother and dialogue more natural. While omniscient POV will never be my favorite, Carter learned not to juggle it around too much - I wasn't pulled out of the story even once, something that happened too many times to count in the first book. Things that were as good as before: - The case - think about how many books about serial killers is out there. It's an accomplishment to make the case interesting and Carter did that. Once again, this is not for the faint of the heart - be prepared. - The police work is a hard work and the frustration is very big part of it. Carter made that obvious. Things that still could be better: - Robert Hunter still needs more depth. Who is he out of his job? What are his dreams? Fears? Hopes? He has to be more than a cop. I would like to see that. In the end: I enjoyed The Night Stalker very much. It's pure entertainment for mystery/thriller fans and it keeps the series on the right track. I'm looking for more Robert Hunter books. Well done.
