This was exactly what I was looking for on a cold raining Friday afternoon. A quick and easy read that had characters I cared about and a bit of substance. I enjoyed them all, but I'll admit that 'Starbucks Boy', 'Flirting with Waiters', 'Princes' and 'Breaking and Entering' were a couple of my favorites.

Her perspective, as a highly functioning woman with autism, makes for an interesting take on animal behavior. The book reads a little slow at times, though. (But you hear about how she's transformed the meat-slaughter biz for WAY better, and really, she talks a lot about cows because I guess she identifies with them the best.)

My first true Jane Austen, and it was unforgettable! I love the entire setting from the relationships to the quaint English countryside. As always the heroine, Elizabeth, is strong, determined, and very headstrong! All of the relationships between her and her sister, and between her and Mr. Darcy are true and beautifully crafted. I love these books, especially with the adorable sketches! Jane Austen is truly an amazing author who's eloquent words keep impacting many throughout the decades.

Oh my... if you haven't read this yet, I'm not sure what rock you've been hiding under. This one is nothing short of excellent! And Edward makes everything wonderful. This is one of those books that I'll pick up and read bits and pieces of whenever I'm feeling down. Highly recommended.

Alissa Nutting is such a wildly gifted & inventive storyteller, it's hard not to keep popping down the tales in this collection one after the other like candy, like a bag of gumdrops that feel deceptively easy to chew but are actually laced with a powerful hallucinogenic substance that turns into an elixir of pithy insight at the last possible moment. I felt almost guilty about how much I was enjoying myself at times. Nutting's narrative style is rapid-fire, economical, and surreally recognizable, as ingeniously weird as Charlie Kaufman, as widkedly outrageous as David Sedaris. Her (exclusively female) protagonists find themselves in all sorts of unconscionably degrading positions, but the luckier ones muster up just enough humor & self-respect to weather their scenes of betrayal. The standouts for me were "Bandleader's Girlfriend" (about the convergence between a hedonistic rocker chick and her straitlaced sister), "Ant Colony" (a truly eerie, incisive allegory of how society captures & sustains its "ideal woman"), "Deliverywoman" (a parody of modern relationship healing between a naive spacewoman & her psychopathic mother who could be played by Sigourney Weaver on steroids), "Hellion" (about a deceased woman's surprisingly human relationship with the devil), "Gardener" (a possibly perfect contemporary fairy tale about a frigid marriage transformed by randy garden gnomes), and "She-Man" (the tragic gem of this collection, about the impossibility of achieving love in a wordl driven by bigotry & hatred). It's a thankless job being female, but this book shows that it also makes for a brutally fun read.

While Cataclysm is [one of] the lead-in[s] to this comic, No Man's Land is pulled off with remarkable elegance; everything that disappointed me about Cataclysm has been remedied in No Man's Land - no, really, everything. My only gripe with No Man's Land is how very quickly society degenerates - Gotham is a veritable post-apocalyptic wasteland, and within three months of its quarantine from the outside world. This little problem of mine is explained away to a degree though, and I was fairly satisfied with the reasoning - it's harsh and very sad, but smacks of truth all the same. This is already one of my favorite Batman storylines ever. Highly recommended.
