this book was so beautiful. based on true events this chronicles nordic men who escape from an indentured labor situation at the russian settlement of new archangel, alaska, in a canoe, and canoe down the beautiful but treacherous and harsh pacific northwest. doig's descriptive ability shines in this book with gems (no pun intended) like, "as coal is said to concrete to diamond, the coastal world of water spun tiny in these falling crystals: flicker of a mountain stream trying to leap from itself, white veils of spray brushing back from the Pacific's wave brows, quick thin lakes strewn by a half-day rain, all here now flying down in sparkle" (p. 135-6). what a fun read for me.

A work colleague lent me this book as he knows I like reading and because he'd enjoyed it. We're a similar age and were both teenagers in the seventies, like the characters in the book. It took me a while to get into, but eventually I did and ultimately enjoyed the book. It's set in a time of battles between unions and employers, with the kids and the parents taking their sides in the struggle. There are quite a few characters (young and older) with their own stories to tell, all of which cross over into some of the others. There's a sequel "The Closed Circle", which has had mixed reviews. I'll probably read it just to catch up on the characters I met here.

I loved this book when I first read it. I loved this whole series...at first. This is the only book in the series that I might even off handedly suggest anyone read, and even it drags at times. The only reason I keep reading the books that come out (we're now on 11, waiting for 12, supposedly the last) is because I'm now so invested. Do yourself a favor and never pick up this book.

For a Christian romance it was pretty good but with the religion element I just wanted to send in the missionaries a few times and set them straight. I don't know if I will seek out the second book but this was worth my time.

Darkover is one of those utopias.....I'm not sure I would want to live there, but there's a decent logic to it. There are no projectile weapons on Darkover. All weaponry MUST bring the attacker within range of the victim. All adults carry short-range weaponry (knife, sword) as a matter of course, and are expected to know how to use it. It is no crime to prevail over someone who attacked you. It IS a crime to attack someone who cannot defend themselves, whether they are unarmed, injured, sick, etc. There are some sexism issues (women are generally held to be unable to defend themselves), but the Renunciates are an option--if a woman is willing to give up the protections generally afforded Darkovan women, she can also break free of the restrictions. Not exactly a societally approved option, but...

Okay book, I think I'll read the second. There were a few parts where I was completely infuriated by the naivety of the heroine, BUT this is to be expected in the beginning of most YA book series. I felt like all of the feelings, gestures and emotions were a little rushed in this book, like it would've had a lot more meaning if it had been way further into the series. I also had this strong sense that the heroine would have easily dated any man who showed any interest in her romantically. Come on, girl! You can at least make him work a little for it!

I ended up reading Across the Universe in two phases. I initially got the book from the library, as I was one of the first holds. Unfortunately, that meant my time with it was limited and I did not have time to finish it, since my library pile had gotten rather out of control. So I got about halfway through and had to return it and wait until I could re-procure the book to finish it. The point of all of this is that my opinion of the book had changed a bit when I came back to it. The first half of the book did not really succeed in engaging me. I had heard so much hype and was so looking forward to it, and it did not live up to that. (Isn't that always the way with me?) Upon return, as I skimmed through the book to make sure I remembered everything and tried to locate my stopping point (because genius that I am I forgot to make note of that location), I found myself thinking how cool it was. Reading through the rest of the story was then a breeze. The story still was not quite perfect (like many other teen dystopias, there's a section pretty much straight from The Giver), but I am super hopeful about the second book in the series. I really liked how shades of gray it was (not in the Jasper Fforde sense). Elder is the perfect example. He's a good a guy and I related more to him than to Amy (how much can I really relate to someone who runs for fun?), but he definitely has a dark side (and not in the oh no, I'm a vampire who might hurt you sense). Dystopia fans should definitely not miss this one, as it is one of the awesome ones that is really a dystopia on several different levels (although more than the dictator would be spoilers). As a final enticement, here's a quote that encapsulates the book: "This ship is built on secrets; it runs on secrets."

David Sedaris is the master of drawing from his own hilarious, quirky and often heartbreaking experiences and turning them into stories that will stay with you for a long time.

My teacher friends who teach upper elementary: if you haven't read this book get it and try it. Not only is a classic it's just a great mystery. I just reread it and it is awesome. I will be doing this for book club at the library.
