Morgan was born into a world where women have little power, where men make all of the decisions, where a son is valued highly above a daughter. But there is a power reserved for the women alone. It is the power of the Fay, the Faerie. When Morgan learns to harness that magical power for herself, she changes history, for she is the half sister of the legendary King Arthur. She is Morgan le Fay, and her power will bring down Camelot. The legend of King Arthur is a timeless tale that has been explored by many different authors. Traditional tellings of the story are very focused on the male characters, and the women are often either evil or spineless. In recent years, books such as the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley and the Guinevere Trilogy by Rosalind Miles have retold the stories from the female point of view, with strong, powerful female characters. Nancy Springer chooses to focus on Morgan le Fay as a child and young adult, ending the story before she encounters King Arthur and brings down Camelot. Morgan is classically seen as a villain in the mythology, but Springer’s take on the tale is that of a good if misguided girl who lets the allure of power lead her astray. While the Arthurian legend will often appeal to young adults of both genders, this particular telling of the story is geared toward young women. The novel is told exclusively from Morgan’s point of view, which will likely appeal to young adult readers. However, because of this perspective, and because the book ends before the major events of the Arthurian legend, a reader who is not already familiar with the story may have difficulty comprehending the plot. I recommend that this book be used in tandem with a more traditional telling of the story of Camelot so that the reader can fill in the blanks for him or herself. Also, while Morgan’s narration of the story mostly rings true, there are passages where the language is too modern to be believable for the time period in question. However, these passages are rare; by and large the book is very well written. Springer’s I am Morgan le Fay and its companion I am Mordred take a sympathetic look at two of the villains in the Arthurian legends. They offer an interesting counterpoint to the traditional tales, and would be an excellent addition to a unit on the legends of Camelot.

Headbutler.com posted a great review which echoes my thoughts: "Read “Columbine” for the stunning reportage. Admire the heroism of students and teachers. Forgive, if you can, the police ineptitude and, later, their predictable cover-up. But pay particular attention to the back story: the evolution of two would-be mass murderers. And then, instead of feeling blessed that this nightmare didn't happen in your town, you might do better to ask yourself a variation of the line you hear on television at ten o'clock: Do you know who your children are?" --- by Jesse Kornbluth, for HeadButler.com Complete review: http://www.headbutler.com/books/colum...

I've read this book many times. In looking through some of the other reviews and posts, I would agree that I'm drawn back to it more because of the writing than any else. Fitzgerald is at his best sylistically here. And of course the story itself is very compelling (and uniquely American in may ways in how it addresses self reinvention, rapid upward mobility, etc...). In re-reading it recently, I was surprised at how unsympathetic the characters had all become. When I was younger, I remember thinking of it as this great love story but the last time I read it, Gatsby and Daisy just came across and naive and selfish...yet Fitzgerald still makes you feel for them.

Mark Haddon has a wonderfully fluent writing style that is pleasant to read and the 500 pages flew past. Although the characters were often gratingly annoying and the story was self-indulgent at times, desperate to illustrate the moral, A Spot of Bother was funny and enjoyable.

Saunders often does more with his short stories to provoke the reader into thinking about life than some writes do in their whole careers. He delights in dragging the reader into the bizarre, surreal settings he creates, and of course we have to fight our way out, feeling groped yet somehow, loved at the same time. Hilarious, unsettling, hugely imaginative.

The Ghost Writer is an accomplished, atmospheric debut. The stories within the story are chilling and could stand on their own. The main plot interwoven with the stories is gripping and keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next. As others have mentioned in their reviews the ending is abrupt and not as satisfying as the rest of the novel. The stories and majority of the book were enough for me to like it overall in spite of the disappointing conclusion.
