Well, turds. I really wanted to like "Swamplandia!" and I tried my damndest to do so. But aside from the 100% perfection of her writing, this story was a big unimaginative wet blanket compared to "St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves". The story and characters were inspired by a short of the same name in "St. Lucy's," which only made me appreciate how much I liked the beautiful brevity of the short version. She said everything she needed to say. And it wasn't a huge bummer. Things were just too dragged out and meandering. Not a lot really happened, I don't think the characters "grew" as much as they "got worse." All of the magic of ghosts and a swamp was sat on by Karen's big sad butt. The curse of the first novel after a short story collection and the curse of a sophomore album both came to horrible fruition in this case. It just was sad. Karen Russell is so imaginative and fresh, and this book was a Frankenstein of side plots and identity crisis-es. Here is exactly what I think happened: Russell had pressure to write another successful and highly praised novel, had a hard time coming up with original full-length ideas, and decided to go with her most promising short story from "St. Lucy's". She wanted to ride on her past success and didn't want to let her fans down. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. Anyways, read her other book.

This book got me through a rough breakup. It reigns supreme over the movie. So many great parts were left out.

The ending was a little abrupt but the story was excellent.

I've just recently started reading PNR w/Angels, and some are good and some are not. I was surprised at how much I liked this. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series

This book dealt with some pretty realistic and tough issues - including the complications around the main "romance". There were some really cute parts.

Since the library is free I had to check this out. Dumb, blarney, and poor writing to boot.

Funny, just after reading this, a profile of another book about a kid who is diagnosed with Schizophrenia came out in the New Yorker. No mention of D'Erasmo's book in the chronicle of other novels that have tried to capture the inner mind in such a state. I admired this book. Enjoyed it. Felt at times that I was spending a bit too much time with the lives of the various characters, but couldn't put it down.

Another great book in the series! It was nice to see who the four friends have grown up and still with the help of the pants, stay together. Too bad there will not be another one. A great book about forever friendship - a must for all women who have close friends.

I started off being hugely irritated by the inexperienced main character, hating the potential love interest and thinking I could predict the whole plot and ended up sobbing at the final chapters. It didn't really matter that I could sort of guess how it was going to end up - it was getting there that was the main thing. Neve is so much a real character with her hang-ups and flaws, and the sex scenes are probably some of the most real and touching I've ever read. Don't dismiss this book as chick lit - it's the kind of novel that stays with you after reading (especially for anyone who has ever struggled with their weight). If it were a person, I would hug it.
