Fun and light. Time and again the seams show in this mash-up of hard-boiled detective and medieval fantasy, but Eddie LaCrosse is a central figure who is both easy to like and compelling to follow in his adventures. The language choices get a bit too glib, with so many modern rhythms and idioms--but when it comes to storyline, Bledsoe frequently shows a restraint that salvaged this as a quick and enjoyable read. The supernatural aspects of his fantasy world are handled particularly well, with just the right amount of scary and sweet balance to the otherworldliness in his, um, world.

I found McDonough and Braungart's approach remarkably hopeful and optimistic. They offer very little that the individual consumer can do, other than ask questions. (One of my favorites was asking why we get toxins and trash along with the product or service we wanted to buy.) Still, I love the vision of industry and human activity as beneficial to the earth. I'd much rather have a grocery bag as food (a positive contribution--"Please litter") than pick the least-bad alternative.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was a little bit difficult to get into, and the end really felt like it should have been about 30 pages earlier, as the main conflict and questions had been resolved by then. Overlooking that, the heart of the book was intense and entertaining. It is a dark story, and I believe most readers, like myself, will feel anger as they see some of the events unfurl. I hate to see any character put through the evil this main character experienced, but it happens in real life, and I was equally pleased with her way of dealing with the worst. In the end, several characters and stories were drawn together nicely, making for a well written story.

I FINALLY read this book!-- THE book I should have read a long time ago. I have all the more compassion and understanding for people with autism. Fascinating book and a must-read for people dealing with autism. Looking forward to reading more of her books.

Absurdly silly, but I think that kids will like this, and it's honestly better than a lot of the popular series written for the same age. I loved the "food fight" in the cafeteria and some of the deranged humor.

This book gives you a clear insight of life in North Korea. This is nonfiction and extremely graphic. It's about a family and how they got sent into a work camp ..(NK concentration camp). Working camps still exist today! I had no idea prior to reading this book, that after ww11 those still existed!!

I decided to check out this book after reading Barbara Kingsolver's collection of essays, Small Wonder. She wonders why more time-pressed Americans don't read short stories. I decided to take the challenge and peruse these stories chosen by Kingsolver as the best of 2001. While I enjoyed them, I couldn't finish them. I really liked "Labors of the Heart." That was the only one where I really felt the writer explored (or exposed) the characters in depth. The main reason I read fiction is the emotional enjoyment of identifying with a character. There's just not enough time to get invested in short stories, which might explain why we time-pressed Americans don't read more of them.
