In Too Deep by Stanley Reed and Alison Fitzgerald tells the story of the Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 men and caused an environmental catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. The authors show that this was not just an unfortunate accident that befell BP. The company itself, driven by a relentless push to cut costs and a culture that celebrated risk taking, has a lot to answer for and is now suffering the consequences. The hapless BP CEO Tony Hayward, who was forced to resign over his public relations bungles in the wake of the explosion, had only been in the job three years when this disaster struck BP. He had been attempting to bring about a change in BP’s culture that had also resulted in a previous explosion at the Texas City refinery in March 2005 in which 15 people were killed. On the day I finished the book (21 April, 2011), I learned that BP was suing Cameron International, which provided the blowout preventer that was meant to be the last line of defence against a catastrophic gas explosion. BP is seeking damages to help pay for the tens of billions of dollars in liabilities it has incurred from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The company alleges negligence by the manufacturer helped caused the disaster. That may well be, but the negligence of BP itself seems undeniable. It learned nothing from previous disasters such as the Texas City refinery. Will it learn anything this time? As the book reveals, ExxonMobil did learn from Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989, but time will tell for BP. I would thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in corporate culture and risk management. It also provides a history of BP and gives a fascinating insight into the oil industry.

i got this from the library. it is from 1997 so a lot of stuff has changed, no doubt, but there are some good stories and what seems like good, practical advice about life as a foreign correspondent.

I finished this book the day After I got it. I cannot stand Elena. Damon/Elena fans will love this book. I liked it but it is not on my favorite books list. I dont know if Im going to read the next ARC because L.J is not writing those books, but I feel obligated to do so because of how "Midnight" ended. I HAVE TO KNOW. Anyways if you're a Damon fan or Stefan fan you should realize two things after reading this book: 1.Bonnie is the best, and 2.Elena doesn't deserve either brother.

*re-read via audible download* Loved it still, and especially got a kick out of the wonderful lesson in the prologue. I devoured this in one afternoon! Gladwell has taken a mountain of data and makes it enjoyably readable and convincing. We are not cultivating all the talent that exists, often by arbitrary man-made contrivences like cut-off dates and long school breaks. Outliers has definitely informed my education philosophy and goals, even while I'm still mulling the information over to assimilate it. Got it from the library... I should have bought it!

This was a fantastic children's ABC book. It would be an excellent book to get the students familiar with the letters of the alphabet. I felt as though the text in the book was very exciting, and would keep the students attention when reviewing the letters of the alphabet.

I thought the first two books were excellent. I think my favorite was the second book in the series. This book started off very intense and exciting but died a little bit in the end in my eyes. I thought the final 4 or 5 chapters seemed rushed by the author and the story was a little too choppy, however Suzanne did a good job in wrapping up the finish and I still enjoyed the book.

I love books about other countries and especially books about how people survive hardship. This book was about a boy living in Morocco during a famine (as told by the boy, now a man, to his daughter who believes she can't wait until dinner is ready to eat). As the family was running out of food, they sold their cow and then the boy's father went into the mountains to the next valley to look for work. Each day, the boy's mother gave him less and less bread to eat. One day he told her he couldn't possibly eat it without just a tiny bit of butter. She told him to go outside and wait for the butter man. The butter man never did arrive at on the road outside their home, but as he watched and nibbled on his bread, his mind was taken off of his extreme hunger. One day as he waits, he sees his father coming home. The family feasts on a meal that night that would be like an everyday meal for us. I liked the inclusion of words from either Arabic or Berber in this book, the talk of the food they ate, clothes they wore etc. The author's note at the end enlightened even further on culture, surroundings, language etc.

A great little travel narrative if one can overlook some of the dated humor (it was published in 1898, after all!). Most of the humor is still fresh, in any case. Anyone interested in Bill Bryson's work needs to see that Bryson was predated in many ways by Jerome K. Jerome.

Best read in installments, interesting if not earth shattering.
