One of those books which shows me something new each time I reread it.

What a fun book to kill (ahem) with which to kill time reading! I don't really have an in depth review, since it's a nonfiction "for fun" book... just that it's highly recommended if you love horror movies or, like me, are getting increasingly interested in them.

I love Peggy Orenstein. I've used _Schoolgirls_ in my classes. And I really liked the article this book was based on("What's Wrong With Cinderella?" from 2006, New York Times). In it, she critiqued the machine that makes girls want to buy and experience everything pink and princessy, and the way that machine keeps parents buying products to fulfill those wishes. However, I thought that this book-length version of that article was a little thin. I also felt that her argument about gender and consumerism was less effective when she veered into analyzing non-mainstream parenting (e.g. entering young girls into beauty pageants). Still, this is a great discussion-starter about gender roles, about parenting, and about media.

There are those books we read as a child and never forget. I couldn't tell you how many times I would run across this book as a kid, stop whatever I was doing, and sit right there for HOURS and re-read it. This seemed to happen at least once a year. I'm always astounded that no one seems to have heard of this book. I only recently discovered someone I know on Twitter has read it and love it as much as I do! It's one of those magical stories that you find yourself wishing were true. My grown-up, jaded self easily disregards books like this all the time, but not this one. I couldn't tell you what it is about the story or prose that so completely sucks me in, I only know that it does. I adored this book then, and I still do now.

Okay, this book is beautiful. The illustrations are compelling, colorful, creative--made of absolutely stunning collages of fabric and other materials, photographed and set. And the story... I read it to my preschoolers, fighting back tears as I read (both times they asked me to read it!). And then we talked about what it would be like to really build your own school from the ground up. I think it deserves a couple more readings with them to see what we can do about having it grab their imaginations a little more. What a project we could make of it!

I have a soft spot for Persuasion. I think that it has the more epic and tragic romance, and I’m constantly rooting for Anne and Wentworth to get back together. It’s an interesting study of the class system, since now the heroine is from the upper class and it’s her love interest who’s low-class and struggles with that prejudice. Love this book.

Loved this book!! I had to go back and reread a couple of things I skimmed over. I loved the twists and turns!

This is the third and final book of a lesser-known series by the author of Anne of Green Gables. The Anne books are more popular, but the Emily books are deeper and darker, and some of my favorite young adult literature. Like Anne, Emily is an orphan, and goes to live with conservative relations. The three books chart her coming of age, her college years and her professional endeavors, and are excellently written. Emily is a character of ups and downs -- people who dismiss L.M. Montgomery as a flowery girl's writer have never read the Emily books (or are idiots). When she finally achieves hard-won and often bittersweet success (in life, in work, in love), you are soaring with her. Montgomery's work is constantly under-estimated, and the way the books are marketed doesn't help (the flowery script, the swoony illustrations). There are many layers at work in her stories, and some pioneering feminist concepts tucked in between the deep appreciation of nature, the commentary on the stuffy contemporary society of her day, and the delightful, well-drawn characters.
