Skye O'Malley is a headstrong woman who steers her own fate with her own two hands. She's sensual, fair minded, and a shrewd business woman. Skye also happens to be very beautiful and intriguing. This book starts her journey from when she is a young woman who is about to marry a man she doesn't love only to meet her soulmate right before her wedding day. From there Skye begins one of many adventures of her lifetime.

Electrifying and paradigm altering (albeit bearing a poor title), this book sheds ominous light on current east/west mistrust. The narrator is a young Pakistani man named -- aptly -- Changez. His voice is the only one to which we are allowed to listen and for several hours one evening at a sidewalk cafe in Lahore, Pakistan, Changez tells his story to a shadowy American stranger. The motives of neither Changez nor the American are ever clear, and hints of malice add a thrilling momentum to Changez' oral history. Equally lucid is the political insight: "As a society, you (Americans) were unwilling to reflect upon the shared pain that united you with those who attacked you. You retreated into myths of you own difference, assumptions of your own superiority. And you acted out those beliefs on the stage of the world, so that the entire planet was rocked by the repercussions of your tantrums..." The structure is somewhat distracting; often awkwardly presented is the supposed conversation between Changez and the American. This flaw does not, however, detract from the overall power of the book.

This is a pretty good book. I'd call it a Chinese fairy tale, but there are no fairies. There's jade, an emperor, a dragon, and people who get caught up in events bigger than they are. It's incredibly well-told and an interesting story. I can't tell if it's the start of a series or not. The book doesn't say specifically, but events are left open at the end for more story to be told. The cover claims that this is an "epic", but at less than 400 pages, I don't think it can fall into that group. All in all, this is one that's worth reading.

How to be alone just kidding... His essays on Alzheimer's and maximum security prisons are definitely worth reading. Although he cites very few statistics, he thoroughly expounds on the abstract implications of alienation drawing heavily on references to classical and contemporary literature. Since some of the essays were written in 1995, the references to technology are outdated.

Probably still my favorite novel. Smith covers some pretty heavy and sad stuff with enough humor and quirks (a young fundamentalist Islamic group with the acronym K.E.V.I.N.-- 'we realize we have an acronomym problem') that it's funny and uplifting instead of brooding and depressing. I think I've read it about 4 times, which mainly means I need to get some other good fiction on my shelves.
