I love all of Patchett's books but this one was not my favorite. It took me three or four chapters to really get excited about the characters; unlike her other books where I have fallen in love immediately.

What if every black hole can spawn another universe with its own laws and constants?

I liked the story and the ending. Although nothing happened, the question of whether she would return or not kept me interested. I liked the idea of their marriage evolving because of her leaving for a bit. I'll read some more Elizabeth Berg I think.

It was SUCH a struggle, both in high school and in college. So shoot me. I don't appreciate Moby Dick.

This book sure did get mixed reviews. I liked it, love, cruelty in the circus. Jacob Jancowski, recalls his time as a circus vet from his nursing home. In the circus he falls in love with Marlena, the horse trainer and rider. She is married to brutal August. Uncle Al runs the circus, he buys Rosie the elephant who is the savior and downfall of Benzini Brothers Most Fabulous Show on Earth. Kinko, Walter to his friends, is Jacob's roommate and friend.

I had to read Ella Minnow Pea for my book group next week. I approached this book, thinking I wouldn't like it, that the novel would be contrived and that it wasn't my sort of thing. Well I enjoyed it immensely. On the Island of Nollop, when letters begin to drop off the monument of Nevin Nollop's famous pangram, the Island council forbids the use of each letter as it falls, in writing or speech. Anyone breaking the new rules is punished - the third transgression leading to expulsion from the island, or death at refusing to leave. The novel is told in letters between various Island people, with Ella and her family at the centre of the story. The islanders are a people who have until now used language beautifully, speaking and writing in what could be seen as a slightly formal, and flowery style. Few telephones on the island means that people write letters a lot. This a very clever book, the use of language is brilliant, it is in fact a celebration of language. I am in awe of the inventiveness and inspired use of language as certain letters drop out of use. The final few epistles are difficult to read, as people resort to writing phonetically so as not to breech the law. Although this is a celebration of language, it is also a biting satire - on extremism. There is a darker undercurrent, as characters in the novel begin to suffer the punishments of the new regime.

** spoiler alert ** I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I was familiar with London, which is where the story. If you've been to London and explored a lot of the sites mentioned in the book, it would be much easier to mentally picture. If I ever go there, this is a book I'd like to take with me...I can also imagine Gaiman walking around London and getting inspiration from all the different sites and wondering how he can integrate each one into his story. But speaking it from the perspective of a fantasy reader who doesn't know London, it is interesting to imagine that there are two different London's, especially one that's hidden from "London Above" (that would be the London as we know it). The ability to be able to open any door is also an interesting skill, but for some reason, the book just couldn't draw me into their fantasy world. Many characters are interesting but I don't find myself especially interested in them either.

Poetic, beautiful, human, compassionate...just brilliant. I enjoyed the book but found the last chapter absolutely stunning in every sense of the word. If you haven't read it, run and buy it
