An acidic roman à clef about a Cambridge art historian who, despite tepid ideological convictions, is recruited to spy for Moscow. Banville's novel is perfect for that particular variety of Anglophile fascinated by the trappings of the era between the Armistice and the evacuation of Dunkirk--tweedy propriety, Bletchly Park, public school homosexuality, and, of course, treason. Banville does it perfectly.

If Godel Escher Bach was Jr High, History of Western Philosophy was High School, bookended with Motorcycle Maintenance& Vonnegut. All but Persig are still quite readable to me.

I enjoy Picoult's books and this is the 3rd I've read by her. Per Messy's suggestion, make sure you don't read "The Pact" and "Vanishing Acts" back to back as they are basically the same book.

** spoiler alert ** I rename this book "Shannon Hale's Great Disappointment". Granted, throwing around Jane Austen's name does invite high expectations, but really now. Jane, our main character, is egocentric and pathetic. She has had many bad romantic experiences in her past (who hasn't?), and an unhealthy obsession with the fictional Mr. Darcy. There's a double standard here, as she claims there are no gentlemen in the world, yet all she herself cares about is making out with and goggling men in tight pants (ugh). The premise of the book had merit, but I quickly tired of Jane obsessing about her obsessions. Page after page. Then making out cause she liked it, then obsessing some more about how she's obsessed with Mr. Darcy. Give it up. Then, the grand finale hits. Two guys are suddenly in love with her. What exactly do they love about her? (This is the question that many sappy romances fail to answer) I only wish I knew. All I saw was a pathetic creature who couldn't move past feeling sorry for herself and the fact that "all men are jerks". Seriously? Move on. A person's self worth should not begin and end with whether some guy likes them. (For an even more painful example of this read the second Twilight book, if you can do so without killing yourself.) All in all, the book was okay. Sappy and insipid, but not nearly so bad as to deserve my dreaded "one star rating". I give it an easy two, maybe a two and a half.

The sorrow of leaving one's home, the strangeness of the new place, the gradual familiarity of strangers, and the acceptance that follows. These are universal emotions. And it is the feat of this graphic novel in recognizing that they don't require the aid of words to be understood. Sketch after beautiful sketch, Shaun Tan evokes the immigrant experience. Simply Gorgeous!

Who hasn't read this book? In 2005 and 2006, it seemed like everyone on trains, buses, planes and beaches were tearing through this book. Fast-paced story with lots going on which I liked - better than the movie.

This was my favorite Jodi Picoult book so far. It felt like you were on an emotional roller coaster the whole time! It was deep and i was on the edge of my seat for most of it waiting to see...

Well written. Insightful. This book was recommended to me by a mother and educator with a deep passion for raising well rounded children. She recommended it not because of any religious affiliation, but because the core messages address the challenges of raising children in a society full of complexity, expectation, and little patience.
