Rebecca/Becky Shapiro is at odds with her life. Yanked away from her-here since kindergarten-home she winds up in Atlanta with her two-year old brother Lew, as her Mom attempts to sort things out. Readers who have experienced the pain of separation will identify with Rebecca's frustrating attempts to make things return to normal. A magic bread box, discovered in the attic of her grandmother's house, at first seems to make things better. But Rebecca eventually learns that what is really important in life can't be wished for and the things that matter most are always bigger than a bread box. While this book is targeted for middle grade readers, I'm looking forward to putting into the hands of some of my high schoolers who know the pain of loss and change.

The focus of this book is definitely on King's personal and political accomplishments rather than his personal life. It is clear he was tactically brilliant in choosing how to execute civil rights demonstrations, and the necessity of nonviolence. He had a keen grasp of the big picture, how the movement was perceived by the rest of the country, the deepest roots of the problems they faced, and the ultimate mechanisms required for real lasting transformation of race relations. I enjoyed reading his views on Vietnam and the concept of Black Power, and the differences that blacks faced in the rural south compared to the urban northern ghettos such as in Chicago (he moved to the poorest parts of Chicago to understand the issues they faced). Having won rights for blacks in the letter of the law, he was in the process of shifting the movement towards a focus on poverty when he was shot, recognizing that many problems faced by blacks were due largely to the rampant poverty shared by other minorities and poor whites as well. Despite the fact that this was pieced together from thousands of written, audio, and video documents, King's voice really shines through. His words and vivid imagery are incredibly stirring and inspiring. If I ever need to write a powerful speech I know which book I'll be cracking first.

This was my second time reading _The House on Mango Street_ and, while I enjoy it and it is a very quick read, only a few of the stories really stick with me. Overall, though, a worthwhile read.

I never liked Sci-Fi, and to be honest I still do not. But this book defies the genre it is bound to and provides for the reader a world of innocence and childhood, mixed in with futuristic visions of space and fantasy. It is one of my all time favortie fiction novels, and is on my "read every summer" reading list.

Like 1977, this volume of the Red Riding Quartet took me quite a while to get in to (100 pages, to be exact) - but once hooked, it was hard to put down. I feel the challenge for Peace throughout this series was to create unique narrative voices (since each story is told from the very close POV of different characters), while still maintaining some sense of familiarity from book to book. The narrative voice of Peter Hunter just never clicked for me, and the constant repetition of long passages of text felt much too gimmicky (and became quite boring after a while). All that said, however, I think 1980 had the clearest and, perhaps, most "thrilling" plot of the series. More calculated and far less graphic, 1980 was a nice break from the bleak and chaotic intensity of 1974 and 1977. SIDE NOTE: I loved the BBC miniseries based on the books, and thought the film-version of 1974 was a great adaptation of Peace's original work. With 1980, however, I feel the film makers really missed their mark.

I think this was one of Pike's first adult novels, and I absolutely loved it. I remember the interminable wait for the book to be released once I'd heard it was coming out. It's a tense thriller, enigmatic and surreal all at once. I wish he'd written more adult novels, because I believe he's right up there with Anne Rice in this genre.

This book has a beautiful cover and although it's a little bit girly it didn't disappoint me. The witches in this book don't fly around on broom-sticks and don't have wands, but have an affinity with nature, especially plants and seeds, and chant beautiful magical songs. Besides magic this enchanting tale is filled with love, good, evil and an adventurous journey. It's not rushed, not boring and is simple and smoothly written. The main character is Brusenna, a young girl that grows up in the woods with her mother. Thanks to her protective mother Brusenna hardly knows anything about witchery and when the Dark Witch captures all the witches,including Brusenna's mother, she's left alone in a world full of dangers. Although she knows she doesn't have the power to win the Dark Witch she is still very determent to free the witches and starts a dangerous journey. She's joined by her guardian Joshen who swears to protect her. Their task is a difficlult one: to stop the Dark Witch, to succeed where every other witch has failed, to find the traitor, fight her, defeat her and free the witches. During their adventure Brusenna grows up, discovers herself and in the end she finds her calling in life. Joshen is just a sweetheart who will do anything to protect Brusenna and it's no surprise to the reader that they fall in love in a very realistic way. It's not a "wow" book, but certainly a very pleasant and original witch story that I can recommend.
