Why books? Because they hold the words of the world. This book isn't for everyone, but its premise is. It is a tale of redemption - of why, and how, people are redeemed. In modern time there isn't a better setting than Nazi Germany. It is mostly for young people, as it is a gentle, almost tender, insertion into the horror that was Nazism and the second world war. Most of the German characters are treated kindly, with full focus on their humaness. It is a measured introduction to the harshness of the stark history of the time for those who are not yet students of it, but is also a balm for those who are steeped in its facts, and who may have forgotten that the predominant stereotype of any group or era reflects only a majority - not an entirety. Books tie her to almost every character as she moves through her days, and Liesel, the central character, is redeemed many times, by her relationship to the books and the other characters. In life, there is her delivery to responsible step-parents, her relationship to the mayor's wife, Rudy's guidance and companionship through childhood and puberty; in destruction there is her memory of her parents, her acknowledgment of Rudy, her discovery by the LSE, her adoption by the mayor's wife, and even a reunion with Max. In death, she is served well by her history, and by Death. Almost every other character is an additional example of redemption: Mama, Mrs. Holtzapfel, Max, in the basement, and after the war, Papa, and Ilsa Hermann, who got back her own life helping Liesel. The book says much more than the obvious, and can be enjoyed by a wide audience, but it is definitely a book best for the audience for whom it was written - the young.

Definitely enjoyed this book, as well. It was interesting reading from the perspective of a murdered fourteen-years-old girl from Heaven and how she has seen her murder alter the courses of her family, friends, and even strangers' lives on Earth. How things worked out in the end had pleased me.
Loved the book wasn't so sure about the rending felt like it wasn't quite over with, like sequel will be written or she was in hurry too finish it.

I love this book. I know it's Atwood's first novel and not as seamless as her other works, but I think I like it more because of that.

one of three great books i read for my Deviance class. this is half creative writing, half theory, which i think is a great idea. the book presents a wide spectrum of feelings on the sex industry. the creative writing (short stories and poems) are written by sex industry workers, from street-corner hookers to more "legitimate" escorts to no-contact strippers. there are sound arguments for and against sex as an industry, and "the oldest profession" as a... well, profession. makes you think.
Set in 12th century Korea an orphan boy names Tree-ear spends his free time watching the villages best potter from the cover of the surrounding woods. On one occasion when the potter is thought to not be home Tree-ear sneaks up to the house to examine the drying pots and when discovered by the master potter Min he drops a piece because he is startled. To repay his debt he begins his work for the master for nine days, and chooses to stay on for no pay in hope the master will take him as an apprentice one day. The book goes through all of Tree-ear's journies to prove himself worthy and learning all he can about pottery without formely being taught. Great read, but then again I am also a potter so it holds more interest for me than perhaps others.

I hate this book is getting so many poor or just ok reviews. Not to be cliche', but I literally could not put it down. It is a murder mystery. It is deep and dark with several twists and turns to the plot. Some jaw-dropping. I haven't read this book in many years, but now that I am putting my "bookshelves" together for this site, I have thought of it again - that is the kind of impression it made on me. I will say, as many have in their reviews, that it isn't a pretty picture. But apartheid in South Africa wasn't, either, so get over it. If you want warm and fuzzy - read something else. Meanwhile, I will get another Gordimer book.
Even though I saw the movie first and pretty much knew what to expect I still couldn't help crying at parts throughout the book.
