I admit I only picked this book up because I'm hopelessly in love with the animals in my own life. Unfortunately, there's not really a lot of fact involved in this book. It's less a scientific discovery and more a book of cute, heartwarming stories. Regardless, I can never read more than a paragraph without getting choked up.

Posthumously finished by his companion Jane Lindskold, Roger Zelazny's "Lord Demon" is an excellent piece of what Zelazny did best - enjoyable, human characters written on a superhuman scale. The conception of the demons and gods and the dimensions surrounding ours meshes with the story. Written with an enjoyable understanding of the cultures and societies both real and imagined.

This is a small book with a tremendous amount of data and analysis packed into the 100+ pages. Dr. Adcock traces the evolution of the hoplite and what constituted membership in that class. He also mentions some of the training. Within this book, we go from citizen-soldier to professional soldier, as Macedon perfects the phalanx as the ultimate form of maneuver. He also covers siegecraft, the use of elephants, cavalry, and naval warfare. This is an excellent book, and serves as an introduction to Hellenistic warfare.

There was just something about this book that made it seem more like a chore to read than it should have been. Maybe I just don't enjoy his tone, I am not sure. There were many, many aspects that I really loved the idea of, and the primary characters were excellent, and yet there was still something that made it just not quite connect. I wish I liked it more than I actually did. Amazing content and characters, but a definite lack of something for my tastes, disappointing.

Another great read by Harper Fox. The Salisbury Key is probably her best work so far. Every range of emotion is explored in this book starting with an achingly sweet anniversary dinner which ends up in an extremely moving and erotic sex scene. The story takes off from there and you bounce between shock, sorrow, and excitement as Ms. Fox takes you on her usual roller coaster ride with unique and compelling characters that grab hold and don't let go. Harper Fox fans will not be disappointed and those who don't know her work should run and buy this book. Highly recommended.
