The subject matter was so moving and interesting, about a young boy's absolute obsession with finding his mother in the US after she'd left him in Honduras. I learned so much about illegal immigrants and how rampant it is for these children to attempt this journey. I wasn't crazy about the writing, though -- short, clipped sentences in the journalistic style (but I've read better journalistic style) and it is somewhat repetitive - first one kids loses an arm, then another kid loses an arm, then another kid loses an arm, so on. The worst brutality involves the Mexicans against the Central Americans. Unfortunately it doesn't offer any ideas about how to fix the problem.

Humorous, great characterization, witty detective--almost perfect! I do think she made it a little too clear that there was going to be a murder on the day of the tennis matches because of the detail with which she described the location and everyone's movements. Other than that, I really enjoyed this "English countryside" murder mystery. Besides the cunning plot, I appreciated the allusions to the post-WWII situation: ration cards, sons lost, other sons reporting for military service, and the challenges of maintaining a country estate. Heyer also did an excellent job keeping all the characters/suspects distinct. I never found myself flipping back to figure out who was who again. Plus another reader had carefully written in the names of the residents near their houses on the map of the village on the first page.

As a huge admirer of Queen Victoria, I was delighted to find a large number of books written about her intimates at court and this was probably my favourite of all of them. I think that this has a lot to do with Sir John Reid, as he was undoubtedly a man with a great sense of humour and who led a very interesting life - dealing not only with Queen Victoria, but also her son, Edward VII. I especially liked the secret language Reid had to learn upon marrying the Hon. Susan Baring and the nicknames they gave members of the royal family and household alike. I found this book a delightful insight into the life of a man I had only seen on the sidelines before.

Adam Haslett is a talented writer. He has a gift for crafting beautiful sentences (that are easy to digest) and for depicting lush scenes of grandeur or beauty (that are easy to imagine). Based on this alone, Union Atlantic is a fun read. The tale of a rags-to-riches banker with little to no scruples who is eventually taken down by the good manners and strong ethics of his Brahmin betters, Union Atlantic assigns villains and protagonists to the financial crisis. Haslett has taken the trouble to research the financial markets, and speaks credibly about the difference between commercial banking and investment banking, the role of traders in hedge funds, and how the Federal Reserve might interact with the leading banks in the case of a widespread economic meltdown. In fact, Union Atlantic often reads like a better-researched and more plausible Wall Street II (the movie). Despite the presence of gorgeous prose and scenery; however, Haslett's downfall are his plotting and one-dimensional characterization. If only his characters had been allowed to learn, grow, and develop throughout the novel, or if only the plot could have been more original and less predictable, the book would have been much more powerful and enjoyable.

I try to re-read books occasionally to decide if I should keep hold of them, especially if I only have the vaguest idea what they were about. This book is a bit jarring, it doesn't read like the typical fantasy story featuring a chosen one, which is good! but kept throwing me off too. The beginning drags on a little long, and once the actual plot starts it's a pretty fun read.

Wow, a scarred childhood makes for vindictive adulthood.
