The author is a whining publicity artist masquerading as a journalist. He clearly has no experience in investigative journalism and is more concerned with his absurd version of 'conventional wisdom' than truth or accuracy. The fact he got a second book shocks me completely.

Excellent - had me at the edge of my seat. Rollercoaster of emotions in this one - very good.

** spoiler alert ** dorothy parker wrote a shorter version of this book, I think. I've transcribed it below? "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

This book completely rapes your mind or at least makes you think. I don't think I'd give it justice with a review right now, but I advise anyone to pick it up. Not that light of a read, but a great summer book if that's what you seek. Rand loads this book with questions and its up to the reader to decipher her answers and come up with their own. Plus, the main characters are all so multi-faceted and you cannot help but fall in love with the protagonist of this book. Do not be surprised when you find that he is the main reason you bought into Rand's way of thinking.

When a new girl arrives in class, the children are very eager to show her around. The teacher says to "Make her feel at home." But, wonders little Mia, how can the new girl feel at home when she is at school? What does "home" feel like for her? She wants to find out, and makes a new friend in the process. I feel like the outsider kid wandering off and shuffling my feet at the edge of the playground after skimming all the four- and five-star reviews of this book. My three stars make me seem like the odd one out! :-( I do love Phelan's artwork and it is charming here, no doubt. And I appreciate the idea behind the story. But, ultimately, it just didn't do it for me. I felt a bit confused as to why the children were so initially helpful and welcoming and then seemed to shun the new girl without good reason. And I guess I wanted more with the iguana ;-) Anyway, I'm glad I checked out this story from the library won't find a home on my permanent bookshelf.

Normally he has Alan Gregory speak in first person, but in this book he doesn't. The female character, Kirsten Long and the other names she uses, narrates her part of the story in first person and the rest is spoken by the author. However, on page 41 he forgets his formula and writes a paragraph in first person from Alan. I'm surprised his editor didn't catch that. Oops! Definitely a sub-par performance from White. The plot was believable but the characters weren't. Kirsten Long was just silly. No way would she ever be believable as an assistant District Attorney. Also, because of her foolish decision to call her best friend, against all advice, she brought everything on herself. And as far as I can tell, this is the first book where White starts having his characters turn their sentences into a question instead of a statement. For instance: "I was actually considering going to see that woman whose husband died at Columbine High School. The teacher who died in the shooting there? I've been thinking maybe his wife could teach me something that would help me move on." He does that throughout the entire book and every book he's written thereafter; I have no idea why, but if he thinks he's making his characters hip and edgy, he's sadly mistaken.

A great book. Pratchett's characters will seem like old friends.

Read it with my kids for book club. One of the best book club discussions we've ever had!

This book was written in 1935 and published in Finnish in the 1960's. All the same, it was pleasant to read and it hardly seemed old-fashioned at all.

Smart and funny. My favorite part is the first half of the book, with its spot-on depiction of the best-friendship of the smart and irreverent Violet and Katie (from Vi's POV). As they grow a bit apart I thought the pacing of the book became less smooth, but it was still totally enjoyable. Worst part of the book is the utterly stupid, generic cover which in no way reflects the intelligent, sassy interior. And actually the title is unfortunately weak, too. Because if I hadn't read the reviews I would never have picked it up, and girls like me (the younger version of me) are the real target audience for this one.
