I read this book because I thought it was a great idea. And it was. Everyone should write their own encyclopedia.

Incarceron is a living prison. Sentient and changing, the prison is a world of its own. No one enters or leaves the prison. People are only born into it. Finn believes he is from the Outside, but does not remember anything from his life before the prison. When Finn learns of a mysterious crystal that could lead to clues about his past he risks everything to get it. With the help of his oath brother Keiro, an elderly Saipaient named Gildas, and a slave called Attia, Finn attempts to Escape from Incarceron. Claudia is on the Outside. Time is forbidden on the Outside. Nothing changes. Since the Years of Rage, the Outside has been stuck in a pseudo-medieval world. Everything must fit the time period, no advancements can be made. As daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, Claudia holds a position of high rank. Claudia was betrothed to Giles, heir to the Kingdom. But, when Giles died in a suspicious accident, Claudia was betrothed to Giles’ half-brother, Caspar. In order to escape a marriage to the odious new heir, Claudia must discover what really happened to Giles. With the help of her beloved tutor, Master Saipaient Jared, Claudia must learn the secrets of Incarceron. Incarceron switches between the views of Finn and Claudia, as they both search for their own Escape. In this not quite steam punk, not quite dystopian novel, Fischer tells the classic hero’s journey tale with an innovative twist. The plot is interesting because the concept is so original. The mix of half mechanical horrors in Incarceron with the fake ancientness of the Outside creates a unique set of dual settings. It can’t be steam punk, because it is in the future, not the past. But the Outside is living in the past with futuristic technology. It is more a dystopia, but not quite there either. Then, while attempting to understand the complex setting of the Outside, you have the Incarceron, this unfathomable living prison. Just knowing that the prison has its own emotions adds a whole other layer to the plot. It seems complex, right? But, the main issue I had with the book was that at certain points the plot was predictable. So, don’t let the complex setting scare you off. I give Incarceron 4 out of 5 stars. It really builds well, so it’s really good if you don’t mind a slow-building plot. Trust me, it’s worth getting to the end. If you are looking for something different, slightly serious, but still really exciting, Incarceron is the book for you.

I had to force myself to finish this Pulitzer Prize Winner. The short quick sentences and the main character were all very tiresome.

** spoiler alert ** I can't believe I've never written a review for this book which I couldn't put down and finished in my bathroom since the main room was being slept in. Exquisite metaphor for life, really good characterization and then something happened with the end where it got really melodramatic...I feel certain I reviewed this already. Maybe another edition? I still feel very wary picking up this book to reread because it was such an emotional experience the first time around. All the big thing failing--dreams dying, but redeemed somewhat by brief joys of little things (finding tapes, some time with your boyfriend before he has to die.) But also captured I think well the failure of everyone to connect since they're each driven in different ways to mask their fears of their inevitable fate. They should have spent more time acknowledging what was going to happen!

it's about the ratcliffe highway murders of 1811, which form part of the moore/sinclair/ackroyd london mythos and which i knew very little about. it's pretty much a model for this sort of thing - a narrative of events combined with a precise evocation of the social and physical context (there's a lot of lovely description of the wapping docks area in a bleak december at the beginning of the 19th century, presumably contributed by James) with some modern commentary about the evidence and the handling of the case. probably what i found most interesting, after a century of moors murderers and the wests and dahmer and his disgusting ilk, and even massacres in little beachside towns in my own quiet country, is how shocked and gripped the country at the time was by it. the 1971 postscript was also interesting in that it points up the pace of change. it was still possible to imaginatively identify the locales back then, 160 years later, even though houses had disappeared under new building and bombsites. although the road lay-out is probably the same, i bet it's more difficult today, 40 years after that. (5 stars for sheer competence and readability)
Read this one while I was in Nepal, right in the heart of where most of the story takes place, and so this story really worked for me. I found that asking questions about the storyline while I was in Nepal helped me have a more informed stay ... I recommend this one as well as a trip to nepal.
