So I used to work with this girl called Sarah, who was a real no bullshit kind of person. I really liked her because she was intelligent and articulate, someone I could actually hold a conversation with. She was well read, she kept up on current events and she could talk politics while maintaining integrity and respectability. When I saw this book on the break table in the back, I never would have thought that it was hers. When I found out I made fun of her. I couldn't believe a girl like her was reading one of those girly indulgent drugstore bookshelf books about some cutsey flustered vunerable woman who almost manages to overcome her sweet, sugary problems by the last few pages. Almost. Over the next few days, when I would be taking my 20 minutes for lunch, I started to leaf through the book for lack of better reading material (I had read the copy of People from three months prior so many times I could probably name the make-ups, break-ups, new babies and total tramps.) After a few chapters I was inexplicably hooked. I had to know what else the silly little spendthrift was going to get herself into and of course, eventually out of. I read it over the course of about 4 or 5 lunch breaks. It was easy to slip into the back of my mind, underneath the homework assignments and papers and substantial literature I was in the middle of, behind the bills to pay and the jobs to keep up with. It was the easiest book I have ever read, truly light and to be totally honest, well written. The woman has an undeniable personality and voice. I haven't been interested enough to get any of her follow up books, but every time I pass them in the "literature" section at the drug store, I consider it for about half a second.

** spoiler alert ** This is a great, if disturbing, book. It's funny how an outsider's view of culture changes her own understanding of right and wrong. Let me clarify: because I was reading about Haitians in Haiti and then in New York (a group of people I'm not familiar with), I was less critical of certain characters' actions. I became, simply, an observer. Silly me. Because of this oversight, it didn't even occur to me that Sophie's mother was sexually abusing her. Maybe this is the point--in a certain context, something horrible can appear so normal, even routine.

Judy Blume can do no wrong. This is also one of my favorite book titles of all time.

Once a year, I pick up this tome and make my way through another 100 pages or so. I think I am on page 200. It's slow going but I haven't abandoned it completely. I am not quite sure I understand how the protagonist became like a devil goat.

Am I planning to publish my own book? More than likely that's the path these trotters will take if any of my morass of pennings materialize into a complete work - Bwahahahahaha! So nice to imagine though. If you ARE one of those impassioned and disciplined folk with an edited manuscript and no dear publisher with the wisdom to recognize the sublime art that you have just slipped beneath their crooked proboscis, then Indie Publishing is an informative resource that will guide from the basics of acquiring an ISBN, to design, style, printing, marketing, and selling to Jane Q Reader. It's also packed with eye candied examples that make it a fun book to just peruse as well.

I really enjoyed the characters and their problems and how their issues worked their way out-and that it wasn't always the easy way out. It is something about the way she writes, I feel like I am a silent observer in the story.
Jasper Kent's Twelve is a nicely realized historical fantasy set in 1812. The backdrop of the story is Napolean's invasion of Russia. Since I do not know much about that period of time, I was excited to read about it. Kent does a nice job of depicting the era, and his characters a relatively well-drawn. I guess my problem with the book is this: Twelve refers to 12 vordalaks, a russian version of vampires. To be honest, after I'd read about half the novel I asked myself if the vampire angle was even necessary. For the most part, the entire story could have been effectively told if they were regular people. Did I enjoy the book? Sure. But it wasn't anywhere as dazzling as early reviews led me to believe. For a debut novel it's quite good, and I'll certainly give Kent's next book a shot. But I kept feeling it could've been more.

I think Pegasus and the Flame is a good book which is about life in mythical worlds and life in New York colliding. I think lot's of people aged 10-14 would enjoy this book! :D
