I know I'm going against the tide here (the book had positive reviews, even in the N.Y.Times), but I hated this book. I read it because of an article by Shapiro on Salon.com that I really enjoyed. But I found this book to be self-indulgent and predictable and the writing uninspiring and not very perceptive. Maybe she was just not that accomplished of a writer when she wrote this and I should give her the benefit of the doubt. After all, I have liked her articles. But I guess this book just doesn't seem very mature. It's a quick read, if you want to see what it's all about. But I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Sticking with 4 stars on this one. I was more surprised (and a little less pleased) with the alterations that Peter Jackson made when adapting this book to the screen. Having thought about it, a lot of his changes seem to have been made to heighten the dramatic tension and stakes of the story in the moment that those changes were made. Also so he could include more battle scenes (see: Osgiliath). A lot of times they seem kind of unnecessary, though, particularly where Faramir is concerned. But then, I always had a special spot in my heart for Faramir, so maybe I'm just being overly rigid.

When I was a kid, I read all the L'engle books I could get my hands on, and loved every one of them. When they'd been exhausted, I read this. At the time, I wouldn't have said it was bad, because I was afraid that maybe I just didn't get it (since it's an adult novel). But in retrospect, yeah, it actually was pretty bad.

extremely catchy [though my edition is killing me, with such a small font size!!:] anyway, thinking about the jews as a people has always fascinated me. it's an interesting glimpse into the history of the late 1940s. it made me wonder about truth and history, about interests and humanity. i loved it! loved the language, the plot, the historical stories, everything. i mourned and rejoiced with Dov, and Karen, with Kitty and Barak, everyone, i guess...
