there were moments I wish the story moved a little faster, however there were moments that I thought perfect in rhythme. I'm not personnal in the upper middle class/ upper class of life or an at home mom. I know that both work very hard. It seemed the main character though was spoiled. It spoke of her history and her hard ship but I didn't get that she was running from it, accepting it, or for that matter learning from it. She just seemed to want to be a stepford wife. I enjoyed the cultural difference of the country and those wanting the country life with all the modern conviences.

I adore this book. The fact that Golden can portray not only a woman but an asian woman and her struggles so deeply and beautifully is a mark of his hand as an author.

This book was decent. It would have been preferable as a long article or a novella. Hamill entitled his book A Drinking Life, but literally doesn't take a drink until 1/3 of the way through the book. The story of his childhood, although full of fascinating tactile details, belonged in a different book. His drinking was always vague and his narrative about it contained very few interesting, funny, depressing or disgusting anecdotes. Although not a bad book, this was not at all what I was looking for in a substance-abuse memoir. Give me Million Little Pieces any day over this.
