I usually find the middle books of a trilogy to be the weakest, but this is the strongest book in the series, I think. I could not put it down.

I have read a number of Tim Cahill’s books, and enjoyed them all. This one is no exception. Cahill is a travel writer who actually goes places and tells you what he sees, as well as what he feels about; he writes well and persuasively to boot. This is a compilation of articles, largely from travel and adventure magazines. A number of pieces deal with a trip to Irian Jaya (New Guinea); these include a horrific trek through the swamps to the homes of recent cannibals. These folks live on platforms 50’ above the forest floor, to escape the mosquitoes. Another related piece deals with malaria, which he got on the trip. Several articles deal with sea kayaking, including a trip to the Queen Charlotte Islands off BC, and some private islands off Nicaragua. He also covered the world spear fishing contest in southern Peru, which was hilarious. One of the most engaging pieces dealt with his participation in Montana (his home) search and rescue when a hunter is lost in a -30 degree storm. Overall, a wonderful read.

A nice and accessible introduction to Taoism as a practical philosophy for life. Hoff illustrates each arguement with examples from Winnie the Pooh, illucidating the complexity in Milne's wonderful childrens books.

I really wanted to give this book a higher rating. I thought the general story was very interesting and the world was rich and fully realized. I would love to read more in this world... as long as it didn't involve the main character or his love interest. Those two characters really ruined this book for me. I wanted to like them, but I found the main character to be a mixture of angsty teenager and pompous fool, and his love interest was a complete... well... tart. Books that are centered around "true love" stories tend to annoy me in general as they usually are just an excuse for a lot of angst and whining. This story seems to be no different. I also didn't much care for the story-narrative as it removed any sense of danger and it tended to bludgeon you with obvious fore-shadowing by telling you snippets of future doom and gloom. I will probably not pick up the sequels. I'd love to read more about this world, but not if it involves these characters.

A favorite of favorites. I fell in love because of a project I did in my Junior year of high school that covered East of Eden, Ender's Game and The Song of the Lark. Go figure. You find the connection...

Pretty good though kind of slow in the middle, best near the end of the book which made it good.

I like my sleep, but some of this horror stuff has been intruding on it. Take this novel for instance, Run, by Blake Crouch. I found it hard to put down; it was an intense, taunt read. This is my first read on a Crouch novel (as a solo author), I read Draculas a collaboration with a few of his buddies, check the archives), and I was totally mesmerized from the get go. People keep asking me to read horror novels; I never thought I would like it, but hey, the Kindle is fully charged and the virtual pages just fly by. Blake will be a guest of ours in The G-ZONE on March 18th; I am looking forward to the conversation. Before we really get serious, here is what is between the covers of this frightening story and a little bit about the author: ” For fans of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Thomas Harris, picture this: a landscape of American genocide... 5 D A Y S A G O A rash of bizarre murders swept the country... Senseless. Brutal. Seemingly unconnected. A cop walked into a nursing home and unloaded his weapons on elderly and staff alike. A mass of school shootings. Prison riots of unprecedented brutality. Mind-boggling acts of violence in every state. 4 D A Y S A G O The murders increased ten-fold... 3 D A Y S A G O The President addressed the nation and begged for calm and peace... 2 D A Y S A G O The killers began to mobilize... Y E S T E R D A Y All the power went out... T O N I G H T They're reading the names of those to be killed on the Emergency Broadcast System. You are listening over the battery-powered radio on your kitchen table, and they've just read yours. Your name is Jack Colclough. You have a wife, a daughter, and a young son. You live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. People are coming to your house to kill you and your family. You don't know why, but you don't have time to think about that any more. You only have time to.... R U N” About the Author: BLAKE CROUCH was born near the piedmont town of Statesville, North Carolina in 1978. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 2000 with degrees in English and Creative Writing. Blake is the author of five novels and numerous short stories. He lives with his family in southwest Colorado, where he is at work on a new book. His website is www.blakecrouch.com . I had no idea what to expect from this novel. What I got in return was one fascinating, intense, brutal read. I was surprised the Kindle could keep up with me as I was hammering the next page button at a furious pace. If you are a horror fan, you are in for some fun; if you are like me and are just getting your feet wet in the genre prepare yourself, that is all I am going to say. The plotline is heart breaking, the journey the family takes sad, nauseating and yet compelling all at the same time: kind of like watching a good train wreck or NASCAR pileup with the cars doing a ton of end over end flips. The characters themselves seemed to have the same feelings early on in the novel. The father told them to close their eyes he wasn’t going to warn them again, what they are about to see and experience was going to give them nightmares. They looked, I read on, and here we are. Gross, but an amazing reading. Welcome to horror my friends. Blake Crouch kicked my Kindle’s butt and got into my head. My thumbs are a bit sore from pressing the buttons turning the pages so quickly. This horror thing isn’t so bad, I am beginning to like, and it is growing on me like a bad virus.
