If you can get your hands on the audio book with Shel Silverstein himself reading your stomach will hurt from laughing the next day. I used to sing "Sister For Sale" to my sister... Love you Megs!

Upon my second reading of this book (for prosperity, of course), I realized all that I didn't pick up on the first time around. I don't think I was emotionally or mentally mature enough to understand what this book was about, which, in retrospect, is pretty embarrassing. That being said, oh my. This has become one of my favorite books. Marlow's character is so well developed, the humor is so effective, dry, subtle, everything about this book is masterful. The ultimate example of having control over your words: not a comma, not one syllable in this novella goes wasted. My copy is all marked up, I must buy another. For prosperity.

C. S. Lewis takes his own twist on The Cupid/Psyche myth in this book. In the original myth, the jealousy of Psyche's 2 sisters causes them to purposely sabotage her relationship with Cupid. Lewis's story, however, centers around the relationship of the elder sister, Orual, with Psyche. Orual is both the protagonist and storyteller. She suffers from a sort of obsessive love, which causes her to think she's protecting Psyche when she sabotages her relationship with Cupid. However, in truth she's not allowing Psyche to enjoy a life that doesn't include Orual as the center of attention. She then puts down in writing her anger and many grievances with the gods for causing her life to go so badly, and thereafter dwells on that anger. After years of torment and self-discovery, the gods finally allow Orual to bring her grievances to them, and the simple telling of her case allows her to see the truth of what really happened, and how it was she who wreaked havoc on her own life and the lives of those around her. Orual realizes that it truly was her own jealousy and obsessions at the root of the problem. If I'm interpreting the title of the book correctly, "Till We Have Faces," suggests that we have to come to a true knowledge and understanding of ourselves and what motivates us... to truly see/know who we are... before we can receive any sort of audience with or answers from the divine. In a nutshell... we need to be honest with ourselves about our motives.

I ended up liking this much more than the first book. Chess is still a remarkably flawed character but I felt wholly sympathetic to her, even her worst flaws. And while in the first book it took me a long time to get on the Terrible bandwagon, I'm now very firmly a fan. Poor Terrible. I'm still hopeful they can work things out (hopefully in the next book? Nobody tell me, I don't want spoilers) and I was a little mad at how mean he was to Chess after he found out the truth, but then again I could understand why he was lashing out giving the level of betrayal he felt (and she really shouldn't have gone over to Lex's right after that scene on the roof. Even I was mad at her about that). I liked the mystery in this book better than the first as well; it just felt a little more solid and well-plotted (not that the first one wasn't. This one just felt like an improvement on the first which is always a good thing in a series). While after reading the first book I was kinda iffy on whether I wanted to dive into the rest of the series, Unholy Magic has sold me. If only I didn't have so many other books to read, too. City of Ghosts, I'll get to you soon (please don't make me cry).

Again, I don't agree with everything she believes in or says, but she has some great, true to live insights.

I have totally mixed feelings on this book. It took a long time for the author to set the scene but I stuck with it because I heard the rave reviews. I like some aspects of the themes/stories but there were also a lot of aspects I didn't. Do you ever feel like authors choose too many tragedies for one story? That is how I felt. Plus, I will be honest. I am not always a fan of the constant talk about sex and how integral that has to be to characters. I know, I am super conservative, but that is how it is. So, I did like the book but I also had a hard time with it.
These books have the BEST artwork in them. They are so imaginative and colorful. Love this series.

The mystery when their cousin Salim is missing from the London Eye is secondary to the process Ted and Kat go through to solve the mystery. In what is vaguely referred to as Ted's condition, syndrome, diagnosis, we watch Ted follow the clues and solve his cousin's disappearance. Ted chronicles his journey to what everyone considers normal; how to read body language, what facial expressions mean, and how to stop doing the things that set him apart. The mystery was good, but the underlying condition that makes Ted feel like he has to change to be normal had a meloncholy feel to it. It was good to have this insight into what I surmise is Asperger's syndrome, and how the individual that Ted is was valued for the person that he was. Without Ted and the way he thinks, the ending may have been different.

2010 Newbery Medal "When You Reach Me" pays direct homage to Madeleine L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time." I haven't read "Wrinkle" since probably Jr. High (knowing it's about time travel is probably enough to get the main points, but I did go to Wikipedia to read "Wrinkle's" synopsis so I would get more of the references), and this book definitely makes me want to read it again. Luckily, Stead's story is not merely sycophantic, but has its own wonderful narrative and strong characters.
