This is the kind of biography I really enjoy - casting the life of someone enigmatic against the backdrop of what was happening historically over the course of their lifetime. This book details how Audubon was influenced by, and in turn influenced, the developing American frontier. This book might seem dry and boring if you don't enjoy this type of writing though.

Finally getting around to finishing off this series so I can start the others.... I like it so far, just as much as the rest. After reading so much devastating books, it's a good comedy read. I mean, I know there's a huge war and Percy's supposed to be doomed, but you have to admit, the way it's written, through a fifteen-year-old brave goofball's eyes, makes you laugh at every situation, no matter how serious. Finished it. Read about 150 pages in three hours to finish it off. I cried about the last 40 pages, especially when Luke died and he asked Annabeth did she ever love him. I couldn't stop rereading that part and making myself cry more and more every time, so it took twice as long to get past that one chapter. I felt so sorry for Luke. I know he chose to join with Kronos, but he didn't know he was going to be the host for Kronos' spirit. He was scared. He regretted it. He deserved better than that. So yes.... I loved it. Love love loved it. Can't wait to read the next Camp Half-Blood books.

This seemed a bit grittier than some of the other Jackson Brodie books. She refers to Life on Mars a few times, and the plot does feel like it came straight out of that series. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing - but some of the usual charm was missing. Too much misogyny and prostitutes for my taste. Having said that, I still enjoyed this. I do love Kate Atkinson's writing.

This book started out quickly and was an engaging read. It features a young lawyer trying to fight he way out of a Russian mafiya scheme involving insider trading and terrorism, with a suite of agencies all pointing the finger at him as a prime suspect. The action was fast, the main character was somewhat believable, and I enjoyed it, though sometimes it seemed like it could have been a bit more polished. I'd say it's a good read if you want a book for a quick escape or a travel read.

This is the first in her series of present-day books, and the main characters, Matt Farrell and Meredith Bancroft Farrell, are mentioned in most of the rest of the series, if only in passing. Their story is one of McNaught's favorite themes, poor man is exposed to the world of the rich, meets a girl from that society, which becomes part of his motivation to beat the silver-spooned at their own game. In fact, she likes this theme so much, that it is repeated in Remember When, two novels later (in which Matt & Meredith are mentioned briefly as an example of how their unorthodox relationship gave Matt some really positive PR). I actually liked Remember When better, because honestly, the things that some characters in this book do, namely Meredith's father and Matt himself, are just brutally harsh. It's one of those books where the heartache/anger/misunderstandings outweigh the happiness (within the balance of the pages of the book, that is). But despite saying all that, it is McNaught's trademark emotional roller coaster, and she writes some great sex scenes (makes me sad for her later work, where she tones them down or glosses over them). I read romances to feel, and she has some great work.

This book is about a bear who is going through his nighttime routine in a different environment because he and his mother are hibernating. Even though the mother is exhausted, she complies, because she knows that is what Baby Bear is used to. It is a great book to read right before bedtime.
