I wonder why two of my favorite books in the series were centered around Ozma's birthday parties. This one seemed a little more, hm, childlike? There was more of a pattern here, where every character's introduction played along the lines of, "Who are you?" "I'm the [insert character's name:], where are you going?" "We're going to Ozma's birthday party!" And so on and so on. Still, the story is charming, and a lot of fun. And so very very strange, but that's par for the course with any of L. Frank Baum's books.

Enjoyed the story, characters and time period. Will’s attitude reminded me immediately of Jace but in a good way because I really enjoyed Jace. Yeah thats right Danya, I'm team Jace/Will all the way. You can keep your too sweet Jem/Simon :) The finish was interesting enough that I’m looking forward to discovering where the Infernal Devices series is going to go. Listened to this one on CD and it was narrated by Jennifer Ehle (the actor that played Elizabeth Bennet in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice….yes, the one with Colin Firth) and she did an amazing job. Waaaay better than the horrible narrator for Hunger Games. I just listened to that series and I have no idea what they were thinking. The voice of the narrator is not a good match at all for Katniss. Very disappointing…but I digress.

My good friend Peter recommended, and I wasn't disappointed. Ikeda's fluid prose created the very compelling backdrop of post-internment/WWII America, and tells the story of a man who was trying to create a life on the East coast. It's masterfully done, and a strong recommendation to anyone looking for a period piece that tells a story we haven't heard very often.

I've read all the H.P. books. As I mentioned before, I do not think these are the best written books. However, my children love the stories, and I do think the stories and characters are compelling. I have read all of the books out loud to my children.

So far I really like the writing in this book. The author wrote it around 1899, it takes place in San Francisco, and reads like Upton Sinclair. Very interesting characters (read odd here) and he gives an excellent sense of turn of the century San Francisco. A student is reading it for my American history class so I thought I would as well. Wonderful period book. Lots of interesting story twists at the end made this tough to put down. Not for everyone tho - you have to be in the mood for either Sinclair or a really odd Steinbeck-like read.
