An absolutely fascinating and engrossing look at the idea of "authenticity" of popular music a topic that seems more and more absurd upon inspection.Barker and Taylor's investigations into the myth-making of early Blues producers and earnest folkies bring a much needed dose of perspective to those who yearn for a more idealized past. Even more interesting was his chapter on the Buena Vista Social Club and the conotations of the classification of "world" music. The chapter on Punk failed to mention (a pretty sizable oversight) anything regarding the legitimacy or authenticity that comes with the means of production to which the music is delievered which has spawned the major/indie debate that has raged (in some wimpy, not violent circles) since the movement began. I also found myself wishing they'd get into the semiotics of album covers, presentation of group, etc. One chapter here draws a loose comparison between Neil Young and Billy Joel. One can easily argue that just by looking at their demeanor and how they dress one could make assumptions about who is being "more authentic." "Faking it" ends rather meagerly calling out for a truce- that people with "rockist" tendencies should perhaps listen with open ears. I couldn't agree more although I was hoping for something a little more profound besides "sometimes we listen to Abba" from two guys who went to some painstankingly long depths to make a convincing agrument.

This is a very interesting memoir of this Indian-born woman who was adopted from a Mumbai orphanage just before her seventh birthday by a couple from Barcelona. The first part of the book is about the author's first trip to India as a volunteer at a school and working with women. She begins exploring her roots with the nuns at the orphanage. The second half of the book chronicles her second trip, where she is able to locate her sister and many other family members, and is able to solve the mystery of her first six years in India. This was a great book. Asha Miro tells her story concisely and with intimacy.

Does this play deserve 4 stars based solely on Shakespeare's name? For whatever reason, it ended up with 4 rather than 3 stars (come on, 3 would be an insult to my darling William). The Winter's Tale deserves 4 stars for 4 reasons: 1) It is THE bastard child of Shakespeare. It is so hilariously hybrid that it is stunningly unique. That said, the characters were a little one-note, but it was pretty easy to fly through. 2) The infamous stage direction: "exeunt, pursued by a bear." The fact that this was actually played out in Shakespeare's time AND the fact that they keep referring back to the poor man who was bear dinner throughout the rest of the play is hilarious. 3) This is from Roger: the depth of child-like behavior that WT catalogs is incredible. Leontes uses child-like logic to explain all his decisions/behavior and everyone reacts in a similar, childish manner-- perhaps it is all just Mamillius' tale... 4) The depth of the winter v spring motif is, again, incredible. I like to think the entire play is just the story Mamillius began, but we never get to hear... (thanks again to Rog for helping me pick up on that one!)

This book was not quite what I was expecting. This is more of a mystery novel than anything. Some of the story almost borrowed from The Secret Garden. It was a little frustrating reading because I could already piece out the mystery and the characters were too slow to pick it up. Not my favorite, but I did enjoy reading about the beautiful garden. The author has a lovely way with description.

Looking back, this is still my favorite Radish book. Though I found the voices of the characters a little too similar to tell them apart easily, the entire concept was delightful. This book is the one that got me hooked on this author.

The title is false advertising! If you want an actual satisfying VAMPIRE story, this ain't the book to quench that thirst. You will be waiting and waiting and waiting for actual vampire action...and then the book ends. I tried really hard to get into this plot, but by the 50% mark it took a complete nose dive for me and never recovered. Between the insufferable main character and her b-f-f, their utter stupidity, the unfunny dialog, the lame plot lines, the ridiculous NON-VAMPIRIC sex scenes...I just feel robbed. (view spoiler) This is the second vampire book in a row for me where there is discrepancy about human vs. vampire love interest. I would like to clarify that as a "VampireNovelFan", I am reading these kinds of series for smexy VAMPIRE action. Don't rope me in and just give general human stuff. When I want general human romance (which is never for fantasy books), I'll read it. C'MON, people! Though I like vamps, I do try to switch it up with general urban fantasy. It's just that every so often I'll want to read a good straight up vampire story, and I'm batting 0 for 2 this year. If anybody can recommend a good standalone book for me, PLEASE DO!! Do I recommend this series? Not in the least. I usually am all about lighter stories that take a comical approach, but this book overdid it to the point of where it wasn't enjoyable anymore. It probably didn't help that it later tried to add depth, but there was none because by that point I hated the book and wanted it over. I could say more; I probably should say more, but the more I write the angrier I get that I seriously wasted 3 days on this that I won't get back. I can totally understand everyone who didn't even bother to finish the book. As for me? Like a dolt, I usually have to finish no matter what. THIS book may have been just the thing I needed to break that habit. I will not be reading another installment from this series or any other book by this author. This seriously made me wonder why it's so hard to get published. *Review also posted to Amazon

We're off to a dark and foreboding beginning with this book, but for me it degenerated. The relationship between the two manly main characters seems to become a whining contest: "I love you MORE." "No, I love YOU more." For a more intriguing historical novel about loves that dare not speak their name, I still turn to Norah Loft's "The Lute Player." Unique, colorful characters and no whining.

This book is an intoxicating mixture of journalism, sociology, and story telling, leaving you horrified one moment and laughing the next... but mostly horrified. Following 100s, sometimes 1000s, of supporters as they tear through city neighborhoods attacking people and destroying property, Buford shows you the power of a crowd and reminds you how tenuous is civilization. The author's investigation of his own interest in hooliganism serves as the narrative arc driving the story forward. He wants to understand these young men and what creates and provokes them, but he also wants to know why he wants to understand. By the end of his time 'among the thugs,' voyeuristic thrill has given way to bleak resignation and Buford seems to conclude that all the context in the world will never acclimate him to the absurdity and nihilism of this brand of violence. You won't be able to put it down.

As the title says, there would be so many ways to describe this story. A young English boy is infatuated with museums and collecting and dreaming of owning his own museum some day. He collects and learns and does begin work in a museum after his school graduation. He meets a girl from Scotland who has an abusive mother and they marry, having a daughter. He finds out a very disturbing fact about his past that causes him to begin a quest to find the truth. The author writes with such an understanding of the depth of emotion we feel as parents, as we watch our children grow and change. As with all stories, people live their lives, grow older, discover and deal with events that either change them for the better or for the worse. In this story, David comes full circle, having partially fulfilled his goal, but dealing with defeat, some due to his own choices, and comes to terms with his life and what he possesses.
