After rave reviews, a blockbuster movie, and a sequel there is very little that can be said about Persepolis that hasn’t already been stated. Still, I must join the cacophony of voices who have given this graphic memoir glowing reviews. As many already know, the story is about Marj (the author) who is a young girl living in Iran when the revolution begins. Her family is liberal and made up of very revolutionary thinkers, which puts them in great danger. As a ten year old, Marj watches as various members of her family are imprisoned and others are executed for their beliefs. Due to her young age, Marj gets caught up in the revolutionary sentiments that are all around her. However, she is unaware of the hazards of resisting authority and attending demonstrations that counter the government. Though her parents cultivate her passion and independence, they know that they cannot keep her safe in their homeland. At times this memoir is troubling and frightening, yet it always remains tender and thoughtful. Despite the fact that this book is about war and oppression, it is not violent and none of the illustrations are explicit. The importance of family and close friends are lessons that readers of any age can enjoy and learn from. Perhaps the best aspect of this novel is that the reader does not need to have any knowledge of the Iranian revolution in order to understand the plot. It is also important to note that it is not your typical clichéd “coming of age” tale in which a young adult goes through a sexual awakening and suddenly sees his/her parents as real people and therefore is released from childhood. Instead, this is a true tale of maturation in which the main character finds herself and her own voice despite the rampant oppression around her. She grows up not because she finds love and has her heart broken but because she learns the true importance of family and freedom. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com

I never thought I would say a book about typeface was a page turner but this was a very enjoyable read. Well written for someone who doesn’t know the difference between Futura and Comic Sans, and also written where a person with typeface knowledge would enjoy it as well. I especially enjoyed the "Font Breaks" in between certain chapters that gave a little more insight in the developers of the typeface as well as the fonts themselves. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick easy and educational read.

To someone who has never heard of Girl Genius, this novelization of the first three volumes of Phil and Kaja Foglio's magnum opus reads like a compelling, albeit only competently rendered, steampunk story. To a huge Girl Genius fan, it's a colossal disappointment.* The Foglios fill in a few details not made clear in the graphic novels, several of them fairly important,** but for the most part this book is a straight-up transcript with no attempt at story development. All the priceless mannerisms and hilarious background details are lost, with no worthwhile substitute. Another, relatively minor, thing: Argh, proofreading! I own a second printing, supposedly much cleaner typographically than the first, but some of the spelling and grammar mistakes drove me to acute, throbbing-vein-on-the-forehead hypertension. If there are two ways to spell a word, the Foglios will inevitably pick the wrong one. Kind of like in the comic, but without five hundred rabid fanboys and -girls waiting to pick apart every new page the moment it's posted on the Web site. _________________ *In the first case, I'm projecting myself into the mind of someone who has never heard of Girl Genius. In the second, I'm projecting myself into myself. **The most important is the backstory on what DuPree is talking about when she asks Klaus, "Any news on my problem?"
For me this book was amazing. I thought from the very beginning that it was quite compelling and not only because I knew before reading it that it was a book about the holocaust is generally a pretty interesting topic, however this book was interesting, gripping, captivating and devastating for so many reasons. Obviously reading the pages chapters of Sarah were quite good and easy to get into, the chapters with Julia are at times not quite as interesting, however I felt Julia was very relatable. I felt this book was so amazing because not only of the story line of the holocaust, but also the theme of family relationships, and the sacrifices that we sometimes make for our family, good or bad. This book is very sad and honestly that is one thing I loved about it, the thing you wnat most at the end of this book does not happen, however that makes it even more astounding, and i bit more real. I would recommend this book to anyone, it is a wonderful read that will leave you thinking about Sarah for days.

I'm not going to bore you with the same old criticisms of Philip Roth. His work most certainly errs on the side of the misogynistic, this novel in particular. I found the first half of the novel largely insufferable--long episodic passages followed by longer passages of ironic carnality--yet the prose is titillating in its salaciousness. Roth does, however, make up for the largely wasted beginning of the novel with some truly revelatory material near the end, most particularly in the last 100 pages. Whether or not plowing through the 350 preceding pages is worth the resulting epiphany is each individual reader's call.

It was really good. A lot of story got wrapped up in this book so it will be interesting to see what drives the next story arc.

I hate the movie. So much. It ruined a good thing. This book made me snarf multiple times, especially when the transvestite and cello case got in on the act.

"...any American who has eaten a winter tomato, either purchased at a supermarket or on top of a fast food salad, has eaten a fruit picked by the hand of a slave. That's not an assumption. That is a fact." -pg.75 I first learned about the Florida tomato atrocities through Estabrook's article in Gourmet in 2009 http://www.gourmet.com/magazine/2000s... . When I heard a public radio interview with him in 2011 upon release of this book, I wanted to find out more. There's a very dark side to this story - one of human trafficking and slavery on American soil, as well as the propagation of a fruit that bears little likeness to what it was even 25 years ago... My hope is that more awareness and advocacy for this cause will shed light on both the egregious human rights violations and the environmental atrocities that are taking place in Florida's tomato industry.
