Thanks Neita. It was good to finish off this series. I enjoyed it, though it may not be the most realistic series on the planet, it was fun to read, almost fantasy even. I loved the baseball component, but I think mostly I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I liked the various personality and thought they were well developed--Dawson, Zona May, Zeke, Darlene....strong personalities, but each of them was like someone I know, so they were very believeable and even funny. I thought this was the funniest of the books--even made me laugh aloud a few times at the wit of the characters. Fun.

To date the most overrated work of 20th century analytic thought (if one wishes to truly count the later Wittgenstein as an analytic). Written in a fragmentary styled not seen in the traditional philosophical corpus since Spinoza, Wittgenstein often leaves the reader guessing at what he could possibly be referencing. The work starts out quite strong as a critique of Russell and Moore, concerning their conceptions of language and its logic. But as the work progresses, many philosophers mistakenly take the hermeneutical gap between author and reader to be a sign of Wittgenstein's genius; instead of the proper and simpler idea that Wittgenstein himself is working with a fragmentary mind. Indeed, the fragmentary style allows many different thinkers to draw quite disparate conclusions from the same passages. I suspect the real reason everyone loves Wittgenstein is they love that he provides a means by which to buttress one's own theoretical predispositions.

Amazing essays. "Dreamers of the Golden Dream" in particular has cast its shadow upon my life for over four decades now. Growing up in Southern California, my family moved in the same circles as the Millers and other players in the essay. While the point of the essay is not an indictment of Lucille Miller but rather the local culture, I could not help but feel the personal impact of the tragic events on Lucille's children. After all, I went to picnics and other events with Kimi Kai, the little girl that Lucille gave birth to while in prison. I feel sad knowing what happened to this family and Kimi's early death. Didion's gift was the poignant essay that uncovers the unique subtext of this culture.

I hadn't read this since the hardcover was brand new, which means I hadn't read it since Clinton was president, which meant yikes, the last piece, added to the paperback, in which Marcus imagines two different outcomes to the 2000 election and the ensuing presidencies, was a hell of a downer. It also meant that this turned out to be a crazy trip down memory lane, particularly as the book moved toward the impeachment years. In much the way visiting the Clinton Library allowed for the strange experience of seeing my lifetime packaged as history, this book was a constant flashback to my adolescence. It's not a period I'm ever particularly eager to relive, but I suppose it's useful to be reminded of the series of events that poisoned me against the Republican Party, and to see how little their tactics have changed. Along the way, the cameos from the non-Clintons and non-Presleys, particularly Kurt Cobain and Bob Dylan, are a real treat.

Even though I usually read books first and then watch the movies, I took an exception here since I saw the movie quite awhile ago. I liked the book about the same as the movie - which is to say, a lot.

this was a surprise. I only got it at the last minute from the library. Okay, it isn't even kept on the regular dewey shelves. It is kept on the general "audio"shelf, meaning it was donated and not deemed worth enough to be assigned a number. I listened to this on audio, which was great, because the story is told by one of those crisp clear British readers who can do great voices. I felt like I was there! As Dr Stanley went to his last expedition into the congo, to save some Amin, to keep England's interest there etc. HOwever, one doubts he was motivated for England as much as he was for himself, as he took the hardest route, "through the Etruirian woods". You know, if I was British, I would probably be getting into these explorers, especially Stanley and Livingston. There were parallels between the African expedition and the first expeditions of fur trappers into our great Northwest, esp Oregon. For one, both countries had native tribes, both friendly and hostile. For another, both countries had tribes that hated the whites due to their experience with other whites. This book, it wasnt' an exposure to whites, but, whenever Stanley's party tried to blaze, the slavers would go right before. They would burn villages etc, and soon Dr Stanley's party was assoc with this. Most came from "lower class" backgrounds. Stanley certainly did and so did a lot of the trappers. How exciting it must have been to explore where no white man had ever been! When I am hiking in the woods and we often find places not many people go around, I try to "blaze" a trail, in my peevy amateur way, going where there isn't one. Even if there is one close hah a. It's the closest thing I have heard of that parallels the history of my beloved Oregon, and around the same time as well. Accuenting that there really aren't many differences when it comes to conquering the land, enduring things one can't control like weather, and water. Learning to get along iwth the indegenouse people or you can't really make it. there is a sort of tragic ending, and you sort of are left to wonder what it was all for, those loss of lives and so forth. However, the purest motive for exploration is exploring for the sake of exploring! and a little fame in doesn't hurt finally, the explorere's personality. had they not been so cocky, so focused, despite the hardship on those with the leader, could they really get anywhere??

Ayrıca Jane'in sass'ı düşürmesi gerektiğini düşündüm. Bazen onun sabit tırnakları can sıkıcıydı.
