I gave this book a four stars because it was good, but wasn't great in the beginning, but the ending was good. Weird, but good. Actually, the whole story was a little weird, but good.

"Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed our soul." p237 Bird by Bird is an amazingly practical guide on how to become a writer. Anne Lamott does not sugar coat the writing process or the writer's life. Her advice is practical and realistic. Her down-to-earth, straightforwardness is refreshingly simple and her anecdotes and stories are entertaining. I felt encouraged by her underlying emphasis on motivation- what is motivating you to write- at the end of the book. I really like this book even though it took me to the extreme of absolutely never wanting to try to be a published author before swinging me back in the opposite direction by the end. This is a great read for anybody who has toyed with the idea of trying to write something for publication.

Brilliant and amazing. I have heard over and over what an awesome book this was and it lived up to every expectation and then some.

This is like reading an autobiography that develops into a beautiful descriptive writing piece by a woman who could neither hear nor see. Truly incredible.

I like Olivia less in storybook form, but she's still super either way.

I first read this for my freshman high school English class. Then I read it as part of the University freshman reading project four years later. I liked it better the second time around, though I don't think I'll ever quite get past the clunky articulation. (Poco lit; 300 pages)

Poirot Investigates is a collection of 14 short mysteries solved by the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The pace of each story is brisk, and the book makes for light reading. The stories themselves are quite original. The suspense in the mysteries is also quite well maintained till the end. But there are a couple of stories that are annoying, where a lot is not revealed until the very end when Poirot, very patronizingly, tells Captain Hastings (his companion) the entire story in a new light and admonishes him for not making use of his mental faculties. It sometimes feels that Captain Hastings is the embodiment of the reader himself into the story.

** spoiler alert ** Review of Book March 2009: Book 3 in the Mercy Thompson series. I love how with each book you get a more indepth view into one of the 'species' (or whatever the PC term would be in the book's universe). The Fae had a pretty interesting outlook on life and way of enforcing that outlook on its members, not to mention some scary politics. Zee turned out to be such an awesome character and I was glad we got to learn so much more about him and his abilities! What really stands out in this book though is Mercy herself, her rape, her reaction, and her internal growth as a result. At first, I didn't understand the necessity of the putting the character through that kind of turmoil but it allowed both her and Ben of all characters to really grow and share more with the reader. And as I was reading I completely understood Mercy's train of thoughts and mental state concerning the rape, and felt shocked that Ben's character would have such a background to allow him to understand as well so completely. Not to mention to be able to explain it all the Adam, make him understand, and do it without getting himself killed. And of course I just absolutely adored Kyle and Warren. They are by far my favorite characters in these books, especially in the scene where they are watching Queen of the Damned. Simply hilarious. Can't wait to read the 4th book, Bone Crossed, even though I will be waiting for it to come out in paperback. Don't get me wrong I am glad Briggs is doing well enough that her publishers think she should start publishing in hard back but I can't help it. I like for all of my books to match! Crazy I know. ***** Review of audiobook November 2010: (Random side note - So didn't wait on the paperback for Bone Crossed! And now I am buying the older books in hardback as they come out! LOL!) Lordy, listening to the audio book of this was INTENSE. I was sad, mad, upset, and a dozen other emotions listening to the end of this book. My god. So much more emotional hearing it than just reading it. This is by far one of my faves of the entire series!!!!
