This book had it's moments. There are great action sequences and a really interesting plot. A certain aspect of the story made me uncomfortable, which I'm sure everyone who has read it would agree, but I won't say too much about that because I don't want to give anything away. Sometimes the writing style is a bit much and some of the dialogue was a bit forced but overall, I did enjoy the book and already purchased City of Ashes so I can see what happens next.

This was a wonderful book for a pre-teen as a young girl I had read this book and it was so moving to me and my little life at the time.

Jarry writes in several different modes and often serveral at once. He's probably the definition of literary absurdity but he's also possibly Rabelais's best student. At times his writing is somewhat like Pierre Klossowski in that he's bent on proving how well read he is - and both Jarry and K. are VERY well read indeed. But sometimes this mode becomes laborious to readers that are not his peers. You can almost feel him nudging his peers and smugly waiting for their approval but there's worse literary sins that that. The reviews claim this was submitted for an "erotic" journal but there's little "sexy" involved here. Just as Rabelais wasn't afraid to include banal in his lofty considerations - Jarry (and Klossowski FWIW) is very much in touch with each of his orafices. This makes him more scientific than sexy the way I see things - but Gulliver faced similar reproach when he tried to explain that urine was the most efficient tool available to achieve a mutual goal. If you're not shocked by unrestrained banality, scholarly name-dropping and blatant absuridty - you're probably not going to read this review either way. If bicycles, blowjobs and drinking yourself to death are amongst the methods you consider employable to live a more interesting life - you are probably going to love Jarry. This is not a good place to start with Jarry - but those that are familiar with him will appreciate this. I'd say the iconic Ubu Roi and Faustroll are better starting points. Faustroll is worth the coin for the list of Faustroll's Library which will provide you many years of amazing reading - check that out for certain. Ben Fisher's book makes a great compliment to Faustroll as it details the contents of that list in scholarly detail, by my green candle.

More about the exploits of the characters who live at 44 Scotland Street in Edinburgh. Lively, witty, amusing, and sometimes thoughtful. Gentle reminders about what is important in life find their way into the narrative. For example on p. 327: "Big Lou did not like conflict and estrangement--what was the point, she thought, in being at odds with those whom we should love when our time on this earth was so very short?" In fact, in trying to describe the writing of McCall Smith I would say that he is something of a Scottish Garrison Keillor. The book ends with an impromptu poem at the end of a toast to a friend who will be leaving Edinburgh. This sums up the feel of the book fairly well (and is also rather Keillor-esque): Dear one, how many years is it--I forget-- Since that luminous evening when you joined us In the celebration of whatever it was that we were celebrating--I forget-- It is a mark of a successful celebration That one should have little recollection of the cause; As long as the happiness itself remains a memory. Our tiny planet, viewed from afar, is a place of swirling clouds And dimmish blue; Scotland, though lodged large in all our hearts Is invisible at that distance, not much perhaps, But to us it is our all, our place, the opposite of nowhere; Nowhere can be seen by looking up And realising, with shock, that we really are very small; You would say, yes, we are, but never overcompensate, Be content with small places, the local, the short story Rather than the saga; take pleasure in private jokes, In expressions that cannot be translated, In references that can be understood by only two or three, But which speak with such eloquence for small places And the fellowship of those whom you know so well And whose sayings and moods are as familiar As the weather; these mean everything, They mean the world, they mean the world.

Entertaining, but forgettable. It has a very similar feel to another Sarah Dessen book, The Truth About Forever: Girl begins the book separated from her old, familiar life. Bad Boy takes interest in girl and is surprisingly kind and misunderstood. Girl follows Bad Boy and discovers that life is so much more than she assumed it had to be. I had a real issue with the narrator. I was listening to the audiobook, and the voice actress was simply awful. She made Owen sound desperately foolish and self-absorbed about his music. He seemed dorky and obnoxious, but he was supposed to seem big and tough on the outside. And Mallory, Owen's sister, was given a voice that grated on the nerves. Not to mention that the voice used for the main character was often filled with unnecessary airheadedness. I often had to re-think a line of dialogue that was just said, and imagine how I would have said it in my own head, if I had been reading it. Any actor that brings me out of the story so often isn't doing their job correctly. I might have liked the characters more if I had been reading it instead of having it read to me, which is unfortunate! It's not often that a narrator can disrupt the story so badly. I'd recommend the book, but not the audiobook.

What a bad book. A pure waste of reading time. How could Z.S. come up with such an impossible story-line?

Very satisfying sequel to Swim the Fly. This time the story is told from Cooper's point of view. I really enjoyed getting inside Cooper's head and thought way that his character was humanized quite well without him loosing his crazy, somewhat immature charm.
