Not only is Eggers delightfully, surprisingly, and heartbreakingly spot-on in capturing the voice of a Sudanese refugee "rescued" from Kenyan and Ethiopian refugee camps to start a new life in Atlanta, but he manages to convey this tragic and uplifting tale in a very Eggers-esque way: sudden bursts of lyrical prose amidst bald statements and jarring imagery. If you know little about the crisis in the Sudan, or even if you just read about it occasionally in the news, What is the What has the added bonus of giving you a firsthand, personal synopsis. I had a hard time sleeping at night while reading this because the images of bloodshed, poverty, famine and utter lawlessness stuck with me, but the feeling that resonates long after the last page is read is that of the neverending hope of the real-life protagonist, Achak Deng.

OH! I loved loved loved loved LOVED this! I had high expectations (just from reading the blurb, it set me off), and they were definitely met! I'm even contemplating pre-ordering the next one! So, though we have books like this, this time the bad guys are ANGELS. A completely new twist, and I have to say that I'm pleased by it! "Angel burn" is so creative, the way it works and everything, and I have to say that I was completely lost in the thrall of this book. Willow (at first I didn't like her name, but it grew on me) is a great character - hesitant, especially about her angel, but she eventually grows into her role. And then there's swoon worthy Alex, the reserved AK, angel killer, with a protective nature. It's the typical forbidden romance, but with them it's just too cute and adorable for me to say anything else. Though there are some cheesy moments, with all of their alone time and fluff, you know me - I like my cheese! There are some predictable events (we ALL knew who her father was), but despite the few flaws here and there, I'm certainly hooked to this series and these lovable characters. Alex and Willow's love is strong and true, and I have to say that I can't wait to see where it's going to lead them. (Although I like my love triangles, I also like them to be obvious, as in, there's no contest between the main guys. So - Alex and Willow BETTER stay together). Any other comments? Not any bad language or too explicit scenes, as far as I remember (I don't even mind them, so I can read through them unconsciously). Good writing style, filling us in on the bad guys too. In general - terrific!

** spoiler alert ** Had I not ever followed General Hospital, I would be giving this a 5 star rating no question. This book was full of action, great characters, suspense, surprises in the overall story. I do not like turning a rape into something that later on, is turned into a seduction or in this case "saving the world seduction".. Again I understand this is all fantasy and make believe, which is why I enjoy it so much, but this is a hot button issue for me. Especailly when the author KNOWS she is going to put them together as a mated couple.. I even liked how they as a couple worked around the betrayal and guilt from the first encounter.. It wasn't done quickly and she even made it all work in the end. So it is problaby just me being me.. Like dead mates being replaced.. Hate that too.!!! Oh well, take from this what ever you want to.. It was a good read..

This is an exciting book with the LDS perspective of the last days. The story opens with three large earthquakes that happened simultaneously. Three main story lines play out along with a couple of more minor ones. We learn about Dove, a Navaho orphan who has gang ties in order to survive. I initially did not care for this part of the book because I thought it slowed the story down and I had little sympathy for the gang lifestyle. However, it picked up speed as the story progressed and I soon could not wait to find out what was happening with Dove and his associates. We also learn to care about Merry, a LDS convert, young wife, and mother who happen to be a brilliant medical researcher. She has to prove that a large corporation's vaccine could irreparably harm those that its proclaiming would help. The third storyline are e-mails sent from a loving father who works with the Church to his son serving a mission in Taiwan. The e-mails in the book are some of my favorite sections. This wise father is sharing with his son the signs of the Last Days. He shares scripture references which I enjoyed looking up and reading. This book is the first in a trilogy. These books are no longer being published, but it's possible to find used copies online. I highly recommend this book to others who are interested in learning what could happen in the last days.

Goldberg's book is not only a book about how to be a writer, but its lessons can be applied to any kind of artist. The extra bonus is the lessons you can apply to your life.

In this one, things get very personal. Goodwin, Besty's manager and friend is accused of murdering his lover of many years, John. Things don't look good but Besty with the help of the gang at Crewel world gets to the truth. I liked this one quite a bit because instead of being someone from a friend's family, the tragedy hits close to home, like in the debut novel of this series. Pretty good.

Really enjoyed the audiobook version of this book. As with most of Picoult's books, deals with current issues. The audiobook included music written by the author as well as multiple narrators.

It pains me to give any Lynn Flewelling book one star, but there it is--this book is a bore. It normally takes me max 2 days to finish a book of hers, esp the Nightrunner series. This time it took me nearly three weeks. The characters talk, then they travel mostly uneventfully to another place. Shampoo, rinse, repeat for most of the book. There is no excitement here at all. I don't know if she' writing any more installments of the series, but you might want to skip this one and read the next one.
