I'm in two minds about this book. I found it a lot of it self-indulgent, sub-Brodkeyean word playing, without any of the emotional charge and depth that Brodkey provides. I had no sense of Oliver's charm or the narrator's desirability, and I found their sexual flip-flopping deeply unconvincing. I also find it hard to believe that any bookseller with an ounce of sense would organise a poetry reading in Rome in August. Having said all that, I did read it to the end and was left with a sense of the characters' loss, and the poignancy of that, though once again my instinct was to shake them both for being so pathetically blind to their own needs. Its relentless smugness about culture was also pretty wearying. It was a pity Elio didn't just fuck the baker boy and get himself sorted out before Oliver's arrival... In fact, I've just argued myself round to no longer being in two minds about the book. I'm in one, and it's negative. Well-written, for what that's worth, but without much substance. And for a novel about passion, it managed to stir very little passion in this reader...

A mediocre collection. There were only two stories that stood out to me as particularly good: Hiromi Goto's "The Sleep Clinic for Troubled Souls" and Rachel Pollack's "The Beatrix Gates." The ten stories they selected *were* widely varied, which was interesting, but I also wanted more authors.

Amazing read and became engrossed in this in well, nineteen minutes. I felt it had a surprise ending about what truly happened during those life changing minutes. Can your own child become a mystery to you? What does it mean to be different in our society? Is it ever okay for a victim to strike back? And who — if anyone — has the right to judge someone else? Jodi Picoult answers all this questions brilliantly, and is a must read.
