i read this book because my grandfather was a bataan death march survivor. it is an incredible story that brought me to tears many times. i found myself looking for him in the photos :) i couldnt believe the horrors he would have went thru and yet he still had a great attitude about life. this is a story that isnt talked about much and helped me understand so much about my family history.

Finished this book with the girls. As I read the biography of the author, Madeline suggested we should read The Trumpet of the Swan, since we've read two books and enjoyed them. Madeline didn't want to read about a mouse when we started, but she grew to like the book, and both her and Ella enjoyed the book. They were surprised by the ending, they and I expected Stuart Little to return home and to find the Margalo.

This is a very geeky books with lots of scientific jargon which a non-technical person nay not be able to understand without considerable effort. However, readers who have relevant technical background will find it a good and interesting read. See full review here - http://ashutoshsrivastava.com/2011/09...

Favorite quote: "Age is a terrible thief. Just when you're getting the hang of life, it knocks your legs out from under you and stoops your back. It makes you ache and muddies your head and silently spreads cancer through out your spouse." p.12 Graphic, definately adult novel, but very sweet story!

I thought this thin volume was a manila file folder when I first spotted it on the shelf in the library. It's really an illustrated short story by king curmudgeons of sixties counter culture Charles Bukowski and R. Crumb. Don't let the tags fool you, this is not a comic. It looks a lot like a children's book with its large type and captioned illustrations. Don't let that fool you either, because Bukowski and Crumb are as adult as expected. The story is classically Bukowski about a man visiting his extremely insane wife in the mental hospital. She's correct about her accusations of his infidelity, but it's not her accusations that make her crazy, it's the way she delivers them. There's nothing disappointing about Bukowski's writing here, it is as poignant, sharp and strangely beautiful as usual. I've seen Crumb's work when he's lazy or rushed and it's not pretty. This is not that bad but it's certainly not his best effort. Technically the drawings are fine, but they lack the Crumb spirit of his best work. I don't know how this collaboration came to be but I imagine that Bukowski and Crumb are probably too alike to get along. I could see them disagreeing on many other things as well. So Give Me Your Love seems to have been a project that was more of job for these two men than a real collaboration. While it's a damn good story, Bukowski could have easily pulled it from a short story archive and Crumb probably drew everything in one day. It's not that I don't think it's worth reading. I just don't think it's worth much effort to read it.

Will this book ever end? Eventually, yes, it does. A good book in which almost nothing good happens.

I love Nicholas Sparks and once again he has lured me into this story of love, passion, and romance. Its one of those books that is hard to put down and I either fall asleep reading it or Brad makes me put it down and go to sleep.

I was drawn to this book by the exciting promise of its blurb and the horrific elements contained within. After finishing the book, however, I felt misled and somewhat unsatisfied with how things turned out. Still, I may give the author another try--preferably with a book club.

I started this book having been told that if I liked Murakami, I would LOVE this, and I became more and more perplexed the farther I got into the story. It's not that it's bad - it's the voice of the same author that I loved by way of Wind Up Bird Chronicle, and I cared about what happened to the characters in the end. It's just not that great. It's a love story with the trademark Murakami eccentricities, but there's nothing particularly unique or terribly moving about it. My reaction at the end was, "Aw. That's nice." A few things I will say to dispel any of the common misconceptions about Norwegian Wood: this is not Murakami's masterwork, it's merely his best KNOWN work. And maybe given that there are more sex scenes in it than probably all of his other books combined, that's not surprising. The sex isn't gratuitous, and since the story is told from the perspective of a 19(ish) year old male who's trying to navigate relationships with the people around him (mostly female) I think it would be odd if sex weren't a major theme. I don't know many 19 year old guys with women around them that don't think about sex often. Just for the record, the sex does move the story along and it's interesting to watch his opinions and habits change, as they do for all of us as we sexually mature, but still. You get descriptions of female orgasms and breasts, so I can only imagine that helps to boost this novel's popularity. Anyway, back to the point - the second myth I want to dispel is that this is NOT the Japanese Catcher In The Rye. Maybe I'm biased because I hated CITR, but this book has a much more sympathetic protagonist and I found myself able to relate to his version of angst much better than I ever did to Holden Caufield's. I always found Holden to be whiny and annoying; Toru is wrestling with the more universal problem of basic loneliness. Loneliness is another recurring theme that I think is really well-developed in the story, and since suicide is such a problem in Japan, that also factors in as part of the theme. This exploration alone does elevate this book above the normal love story fare, I'd say, and was part of what made me see it through to the end. I guess all things considered, it was a pretty easy and entertaining read, and it doesn't leave you dissatisfied, so I can't complain too much. It just wasn't anything special. And I think I feel like anyone can do easy and entertaining; I didn't need that from Murakami. So if you want to understand why people love him, this probably isn't the book to do it, but if you want a piece of above average book candy, this is not a bad choice.
