It was one of the worst books I ever read. Truly. I am obsessed with history, I really like the ancient world, but this book - it was beyond all my expectations. Ok, you know the story the fall of Troy, there is no place for the author's fantasy and imaginations, but the characters...they were plain, simple, and couldn't catch my eye - Briseis was the greatest selfish bitch, I ever read! I couldn't read this book till the end, I put it down after 78 pages. It is better I don't give any star for that book.

I love Oliver Sacks, but I don't think this is one of his stronger works. Mostly I feel like he didn't quite know what kind of book he wanted to write here; it starts off with case studies of other people, then talks about some of his personal experiences with vision and quirks of visual processing, then reprints a journal he kept while he underwent treatment for ocular melanoma, then concludes with a theoretical essay about different ways that blind people understand the world and use the visual parts of their brains. None of it was boring or dry, but nothing really drew me in either. Sacks at his finest keeps you marveling at all the strange and unique ways the human mind can function (or disfunction). This book is interesting, but I never really hit any "wow!" moments. I'll continue to point people toward The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat or An Anthropologist on Mars to introduce them to Sacks.

My first impulse was to just copy some old, obscure review of 'the Recognitions' and claim it as my own. Alas, even the reviewers, academics, and cult worshipers of the God of PoMo all seem at once thunderstruck AND intimidated by Gaddis' opus. What I understood was brilliant, what I didn't understand is most likely obscene. This is not a novel for the casual beach read, although as I write this, I am on a beach...washing sand out of my ebbs and salt off my flow, so never mind.

Be careful what you wish for. Dorian Gray is an irresistibly handsome (and utterly selfish) socialite concerned with superficialities of the ego: appearance, beauty, passion, youth and image. Upon getting his portrait painted by a friend, Gray expresses his desire to remain as young and handsome as he is in the picture, while the portrait instead be the one to age. As it turns out, his wish is realized. As Gray enters deeper into a life of sin and crime, he remains young and physically unaffected, while his portrait grows older and uglier, reflecting the evil nature of his soul. I found this concept fascinating in and of itself, but also for the questions it raises about what truly defines beauty, how our actions affect not only who we are but the lives of others, the weight of our transgressions on the soul, and how or if we can redeem ourselves. I do wish Wilde had stayed a bit more focused on the above and less on some of the elitist discussions between characters. The book is at times (in my opinion) a bit over-dramatic and heavy in many somewhat pompous dialogues. However, I guess this is not surprising, as the The Picture of Dorian Gray is Wilde's only novel, and he is of course most known for his plays (which require drama and heavy dialogue). That aside, this book is still one of my favorites and definitely worth the time. Great ending, and a story not easily forgotten.

There were a couple of stories (the London one and the tooth one) that made me laugh so hard I embarrassed myself, but the second half of the book was disappointing. A lot of things didn't seem very well thought out and the endings went nowhere. Perhaps he needs to take a break and wait for something more interesting to happen to him than silly dog stuff?

Another great Picoult read! I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting this book was! I am always interested in a good ghost story, but the whole eugenics storyline was also fascinating and sad. I couldn't believe that this was actually something that happened in America! The people in this story are well developed and fascinating, even though so many of them have such sadness in their lives. I enjoyed how the book was in present day, and then went back to many years ago to tell the rest of the story. Getting the characters straight, at first, is confusing but us Picoult fans know that once we get it the story just flows so easily! Thank you Jodi for another great one!

Except for "The Bad Beginning," I do not own any of the Lemony Snicket books. I read all thirteen volumes at various bookstores in the U.S. and in Europe, while waiting for trains or planes. (Children's Lit)

Anansi Boys was akin to a leisurely stroll in the park in that it was pleasant and relaxing but nothing to write home about. The story itself starts off slow but I was escorted through the pages by Gaiman's quaint style of writing and it picked up once Spider entered the story. From then on in it progressed at a saunter and was adequate lounging in the sun reading. The characters are interesting and well fleshed out and the tale that is told is original. Together they give the novel a certain charm and even though it never grabbed me by the short and curlies it was a pleasant and gentle diversion from everyday life.
