The Ice Queen begins with warning the reader to "Be Careful what you wish for." As a child, the protagonist wishes in an angry whim that she never see her mother again; promptly, her mother is killed in a car accident. Later in life, she mockingly wishes to be struck by lightning--another wish granted. Throughout the book, she is fascinated with both death and fairytales, two elements which weave in and out of the fabric of the novel in beautiful forms. The way lightning transforms its victims and gives them superhuman qualities presents itself, in many ways, like a fairytale. How people have "defeated" or "cheated" death. This is the first Hoffman book I've read, and I felt like the writing was trying way too hard to be poetic. At times it felt monotonous. At one point I recall the protagonist describing a sexual encounter as "so real, so here, so now," and then on the next page continuing with "so now, so real, so...." There are these rhythmic generalities that the reader is hit over the head so hard with that at times it almost feels satirical. Then there's our character, who is painfully stagnant throughout the book. Granted, she has reason to be depressed, but the author doesn't even grant her a wild mood swing now and then. When she's not feeling remorseful or self-pitying, she remains only lukewarm. The Ice Queen is a novel I feel like could have been remarkable if only told with a different tone and a shifted point of view.
