I bought this book for my classroom, but it's more appropriate for older teens. Paterson (Bridge to Terebithia) tells the story of two young women growing up on an island off the SE coast. Sarah Louise, a thin-skinned tomboy, has to deal with intense feelings of jealousy as her sister Caroline seems to get everything, including the strange, serious boy Sarah befriends. Sarah's crazy, religious grandmother gives the book its title. Paterson was a Presbyterian missionary at one time, but the book doesn't read like a religious tract. Sarah's anger is too caustic for that. The descriptions of life on the small island during WWII are good. This is a well-written "small" story that won a major prize.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." - Marianne Williamson "Those who develop increasing inner power and freedom to choose can also become what I call a transition person - one who stops unworthy tendencies from being passed on from prior generations to those that follow." Concept of moving between management and leadership, and understand the differences and appropriate times.

I read this in less than 4 hours. I really wish I didn't know that there were 2 books that follow so that I wouldn't know that Katniss lives at the end. But off to read the rest of the trilogy.

Duff has the amazing ability to write like people speak. It takes a while to get into reading because many of the words are spelled phonetically, but once you do you can actually hear the dialogue as you read it. This book is AMAZING!!!!!

At first i was afraid I was too old for this book.It was about the rock star business. It skips around chronologically and I took awhile to keep up. Then I was glad I did. THe book updates you on the past and goes into the future and on this road trip you start to care about many of the characters. SO what if you find yourself meeting a third world dictator who needs an image change. There is of course confusing new technology in the future but i kind of liked it. My favorite character is Sasha.Oh and an autistic person I like a lot shows up as well. You know this is more like 4and a half stars.

I found this book to be an enchanting beginning to the series and I was very glad to read it after I'd read the series. I'm not sure I would've understood everything if I had started here. The book does tell us quite a bit more about Moiraine-who seemed to be so very mysterious until some things are explained in this book.

Loved it!
SUPER SUPER BOOK! If you want to read it, I can lend it. LEND because I want to have it forever! Howard Roark will be your hero after reading this novel! It's a long one but not hard to read. It's actually good that it's long, because I didn't want it to end!

So, technically I suppose this might be considered a "woman's book" as I intercepted it going from my wife to my sister. It's a well written account of two adult sisters trying to get to know their distant mother after the death of their father--who held the family together. Some good historic fiction in a story within the story and if the ending is a bit contrived it's still worth a read on a snowy afternoon or on the plane.

Quite possibly the most awful book I have ever read in my entire life. Maybe I'm missing its 'great literary value', but I don't care. Conrad drones on and on (and on and on and on), so much it's painful. I happened upon this poem in David Bader's One Hundred Great Books in Haiku, in which he reduces Heart of Darkness to haiku: The darkness darkened. Oh, the horror, the horror. It was horrible. ...which I think sums it up pretty perfectly.

Hata! En az bir tane daha olduğunu düşünüyorum, ama hatırlayamıyorum. Ebbinghaus iş başında!
