I just finished Alan Moore's classic and seminal Watchmen, the graphic novel that is said to have changed the graphic novel genre and stretched it beyond its former limits. Now THAT one was DARK. It's about former costumed super-heroes who had been forced into retirement by law who are suddenly caught up in a mystery wherein someone seems to be offing the former super crusaders one by one as the apocalypse of the world nears. It's said that the current TV show hit HEROES is loosely based on this concept. I highly suggest this read, not only because the story is so engaging, but reading a graphic novel is quite the experience. It's like watching a movie alongside the book. And working your way through the layers of stories and images, the superimposition sometimes of each on the other, and the deepening of context with inserted supplemental materials such as fictional newspaper articles, advertisements, and official documents, makes for a really comprehensive and rich reading experience. It really expanded the way I look at storytelling and also, I marveled at the genius of it. Moore wrote this book in 1986 and creates a world in which Nixon is still president and America has become the unilateral world power, with Russia aching to spoil things. Yet so much of its political elements and philosophical themes really resonate in modern times, as if he called it from way back then. And his narrative style predates today's multi-tasking, scrolling headlines, and jumping concurrent stories that still, somehow, impact one another. And the ending...very dark indeed. It was an awesome, absorbing read.

Okay, I admit it. I am fast becoming addicted to the Shopaholic books. This one was excellent and I only felt slightly guilty that I would have gone with the Plaza wedding!

** spoiler alert ** This book is engaging and I would recommend it to other people to read. But the story went on too long; the author kept adding new elements to the story every time I felt like it should be wrapping up. And she kept moving the search for Mr. Harvey toward a climax, then dropped it altogether and ended it in a very anticlimatic way. So it was a great book, but not as satisfying as it could have been. I also found the sex scene with Susie a little indulgent... like living out a fantasy of being able to interact with people who are gone. Up until that scene, the author did a good job of not doing that. On the other hand, she didn't simplify the grief of the family, and I think she did very well with portraying that.

I had high expectations with this book, mostly because I love Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy and I loved the characters within those books. Bloodlines held a couple of those characters, therefore my expectations were, as I said, high! Firstly, those expectations were met... Secondly, they flew through the roof! Sydney, my lovely little Sydney who I loved in Vampire Academy, played the leading lady in Bloodlines and had to work closely with Jill, Lissa's little sister, and princess! Adrian was part of this group and so was the lovely Eddie... Together, and with new characters, this group formed this fantastic first story... I love the emotions that Richelle sets off inside me but on more than one occasion, I had to put the book down to breathe... I was so dam angry I wanted to climb into the book and slap a few people... one being Keith (ugh) and the other being Sydney's own father... and obviously a few others were lined up for that slap too!! However, my feelings calmed towards the end and I am now eagerly awaiting the next installment... I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book and it is a must to follow on from Vampire Academy!!!

It was a little philosophical in places but not so much that it bogged down the story. The characters were amazing and the "point" he was trying to make was not at all what I was expecting. This books is also reviewed at my blog Books: A true story

This author writes a mixture of suspense and romance. This is a good suspense story. I recommend this author if you are looking for something easy and entertaining to read before bed or on a rainy day. :)

Good, often hilarious, but episodic. Reviews have been rapturous, but the book is too scattered to qualify as great.

Short poems about grim children who are treated as outcasts. Very funny but very dark. Typical Tim Burton. Brilliant illustrations. Not really suitable for kids.
