This short story is hands down one of my favorite Poe stories! I love the symbolism and imagery in this tale. Basically, the "Red Death" is a plague that is wreaking havoc on the town in the story and Prince Prospero decides to lock himself, and many of his friends, away in his home. He ultimately ends up hosting a very grand masquerade party and while him and his people are lavishly partying it up within the confines of his sanctuary, everyone else is dying a terrible death. There are seven uniquely decorated rooms in his house where the party-goers roam while the celebrations never cease; and in the last room (decorated in black and red) there is an ebony clock which has a very eery and distinct chime that marks the end of an hour. When the clock chimes, everyone inexplicably pauses and the music stops until the clock is quiet. When midnight arrives, everyone is confronted with a terrifying figure, the "Red Death". As you can imagine, some very unfortunate and gruesome things follow the appearance of this figure. I feel like the main point in this story can really be up to anyone's interpretation. But for me, the message that is loud and clear is that you can't cheat death and that it will creep up on you (much like the "Red Death" figure) no matter what. The clock in the story is symbolic of our internal clocks that are ticking away. One thing in the story that I didn't entirely catch the meaning of initially was the seven rooms. Upon further research, I learned that some believe that the seven rooms that were featured in Poe's story are to be interpreted as the seven stages of life. To me, that makes sense after reading about the rooms in this tale. At any rate, no matter what Edgar was trying to prove, this story was an astonishing one that vividly plays out in my head every time I read it.

The Power-House--and "The Frying Pan and the Fire," a story included in the 1958 edition I picked up at the great Renaissance Bookstore in the Milwaukee airport, copyrighted by "Susan, Lady Tweedsmuir"--are quite a letdown compared to Buchan's WWI novels. The vague threat of some anarchist, Nietzschean megalomaniac remains just that--vague. I could roll with it if there were even a slight and distant sound of approaching international conflict, but it ends with greater irrelevance than it starts and the villain makes it read like a bad James Bond setup, minus the fancy footwork. Even so, I love his depiction of the London club life, rambling adventure stories told over cigars after dinner and men with titles who risk their lives.

Note to self: This is what you get when you choose a book based solely on your crush on Nathan Fillion. Please, don't do it again. Okay, I liked this book a lot more than I liked Along Came a Spider, hence the 2 stars. But when I say 'liked' I mean it only took me one month to read Kiss the Girls instead of two like last time. Although I find the plot interesting--I saw the movie back when it came out and I remember enjoying it--I found the book to be way too long, drawn-out and boring. It needed a lot more action and a lot less of Alex Cross's personal life. And I don't like him any more than I did in the first book. I have a tiny crush on John Sampson. I want to know more about Kyle Craig. I found the kidnappers/murderers interesting. Hell, I care about that random guy in the bar parking lot more than I do about Alex Cross. I'm still not sure exactly what it is, but the character really annoys me.

This graphic novel is so dark it's almost black. Literally! Other than the word balloons and the few scenes that take place in the daylight, the pages are either black or gray. The story itself is quite dark also: an American detective investigating the murders of several factory girls in Mexico. I wasn't very impressed with either the story or the art, but then again, I read this right before going to bed. Maybe I'll give it another shot, maybe not.

I'm also ratcheting this up a star; I'm so into these on the complete re-read. I've been going around lately and when something annoying or frustrating happens, I'll think, "Well, at least Voldemort's not trying to kill me." Also, Delores Umbridge is terrifying.

Eh. It's an interesting lens through which to see the state of modern Iran, but perhaps not the most elucidating.
