3.5 I guess. I read most of these poems outside of the book context, took a bit of the fun out of it. Kind of disappointed that her best description for black eyes were nigger-eye.

I have to admit that the title of this book put me off from the start. Could it be a serious book based on a blatant rip off of WWJD. So I was a bit grumpy to start with, but the author won me over by the end of the book. Jarvis does a pretty good job of pulling apart some of the things that Google has done and tries to apply it to other industries. Google is perhaps give a bit too much credit as being the saviour of all businesses. Google got lucky with Adsense - it was a search company without any income until Adsense and Adwords was created. That was a stroke of genius that has made the company immensely rich. Going from that to youtube, google maps and gmail - and including them as brilliant innovations that will make google more $$$ is a bit of a stretch I think. Google still feels a little like a one product company to me. Time will tell which of their spaghetti on the wall sticks. For those who don't know much about the history of Google, or haven't read The Search or The Long Tail for eg then this book is a good place to start and indeed complement them quite well.

read this before seeing Hitchcock's version. lots of differences, obviously, but it shows you how certain decisions can make or break an adaptation.

This is the text book I used for my Modern English Syntax class and I would highly recommend it. The examples in it were great and I really benefited from the class being taught with this book.

I upgraded this to 4 stars from what would have just been 3.5 stars... I seem to be on somewhat of a kick this summer reading WWII fiction. The Very Thought of You by Rosie Alison (shortlisted for the 2010 Orange Prize) mostly follows the story of young Anna Sands, whose mother evacuates her from London in 1939 in order to escape the Blitz; Anna fortuitously ends up at a large Yorkshire estate whose family has taken in dozens of children and set up a school for them. The author does a great job of capturing the period mood of hope and determined cheeriness in the face of a dark future, particularly in the children. She also writes with a knack about the alienation and daily alliances that children make and break on the way to learning socialized behavior: "She might run down a hill holding hands with Beth. But then Beth would turn and walk away, and Anna would watch her go and never know if Beth wanted to play with her anymore or not. Why was it Beth, not her, who held this choice? Every day she tiptoed across the terrain of other children's affections, clumsy with self-doubt. She could not work out why she feared other children more than they feared her."
