** spoiler alert ** I loved this book & now the series as a whole. I cannot wait until the next one. This is a very adult worthy read, IMO. I saw huge parallels or rather - I felt this was a fabulous homage to Joss Whedon's brilliant Buffy series. Fans who read this will know what I mean after they read book 2 & now this one. SPOILERS below: I have to admit I did not see coming Dimtri becoming Strigoi . That nearly ripped my heart out. Absolutely wrenching. And for those Buffy fans; It was also sooo reminiscent of Angel losing his soul again after he experiences true happiness after he & Buffy sleep together. I also felt the Adrian was very similar to Spike's character. Rebellious & cocky but vulnerable underneath. Of all people - he sees what is going on w/Rose, while her best friend remains clueless. While Mason's death in Book 2 (another shocker for me) reminded me so much of the death of Jenny Calander. In season 2 of Buffy, that moment was a true turning point in the series & the same could definitely be said about Book 2 (Frostbite) w/the death of Mason. From that point, I knew Ms.Mead was prepared to take big & shocking risks & pull those punches in order to develop her main character, Rose. This isn't your ordinary YA book. Again - much like Buffy - it seems as if Mead is going to great & realistic lengths to describe & respect the emotional tumult of become an adult. She does not belittle or mock Rose or her peers' experiences. She acknowledges that oftentimes, being a teenager on the cusp of adulthood leaves you on the fringes of adult life just enough to witness more than the people who are in charge. Rose sees the mistakes & the wrongs & they all bear the brunt of the elders in charge, set in their traditional ways in an ever changing world. Very much like life was as a YA, IMO. Like the saying goes, the sins of the father shall be visited on the son. While that expression is singular - you can apply it in a larger context in this series. Loved it.

I was definitely fooled by the cover and overview. It was awful and I quit reading it. It zoomed through so much in the first 12 pages, diving deeply into sordid subjects the author used as light subject matter. Not my idea of a good read or even a tolerable diversion.

I bought this book at the middle school book fair because last year, the seventh-grader I read with once a week finished this book with me, and it was a great triumph -- his first ever chapter book. I had read almost all of it in snippets, but I decided to sit down and read it one evening. It really is a wonderful option for the kids I read with at school. It's a chapter book about middle school, but it has a lot of drawings and good humor to make it comfortable enough for these students. Many of them are years behind in reading level, but this gives them a great place to gain confidence.

** spoiler alert ** I don't know why I keep reading these books because I really don't like Stone Barrington much. I'm sure he's a great lawyer, but he's a lousy person. He's always been a slut, but in the past when his lady friends get murdered he usually shows a little bit of emotion. In this one he's dating a woman, takes her off for a romantic weekend, then she's murdered, and he acts like it's nothing. At the crime scene he and his pals decide it's time for a meal. Seriously? His name should be Stone-hearted. Then midway through the book, it switches from a high finance swindle story to a tale of espionage, which I didn't like, either, because anything to do with that kind of crap usually bores me, which it did. While it did have a lot of action and Stuart Woods can write very good dialogue, the book really turned me off because of Stone's lack of emotion and character. When I read a book, that's my main focus, who's in the book and what's happening to that person or the people. In this one, Stone could've easily been a cut out doll, flat and two-dimensional, devoid of feeling and/or interest. He's more a cartoon action figure. It's a shame, too, because Woods can write, but I really dislike the direction of the books. I think part of the problem for me is I keep expecting Stone to show some feeling other than being horny and I don't get that.
