I bought this book at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. It's excellent and truly well written. Again, every time I read about the Holocaust I learn something new and more horrific than I could ever imagine. Still I feel it's important to never forget and remember.

This was a very enjoyable and easy read after my recent rather heavy tragic-Southern-short-story-and-WWII run of books. I give three rather than four stars because, unlike the Moonstone or Woman in White, this Collins novel lacks complexity and depth. There was also a bit too much of a boring husband quieting and reining in his impulsive lively wife.

I actually started this book sometime in mid-to-late October, but was trying to juggle it with some other books and I was just getting confused trying to read multiple books at one time. This book grabbed me right from the beginning, which is probably the reason I put it down in order to finish the other books. I think I would never have finished the other books I was reading while reading Exit the Actress because I was enjoying this the most. SO, I picked it up again in November, and I absolutely LOVED everything about this book. I love the style Priya Parmar uses to tell the story, and the story really is a fascinating one. I was somewhat familiar with Restoration England, King Charles II, John Wilmot - Second Earl of Rochester, and just a little familiar with Nell Gwyn. But now that I've read this book, I understand SO MUCH about this time period, and I feel that I really understand so much about Nell Gwyn and her life and the reasons she made the choices she made. The only disappointing thing about Exit the Actress is that the book had to end!!! Seriously -- I LOVED being in the world of Restoration England and the court of King Charles II, the theatre of the time and all the characters associated with it -- I just enjoyed the story so much and I did not want it to end. I love Priya Palmer's writing. She has a way of really drawing the reader into this incredible world to the point that I felt as though I was part of it. I'm looking forward to Priya's next book, which I believe is set during World War I. Thank you, Priya!!! Exit the Actress is fabulous!!!

This was delicious. If you love art it is even moreso. Like a real life Da Vinci Code which makes sense. Lots of commentary on different academic styles. University of Rome vs. Oxford. It was interesting to learn all more about restoration. Lots of art history jargon which can be tedious. Since it is non-fiction many of the "characters" were academics who I had read extensively in class. Read it in one day. Do it for Caravaggio. He died so young.

This whole series was a light read. I enjoyed some bits of it, but most of the series felt two dimensional and more drawn out than necessary. I didn't love the protagonist, but she didn't grate on me too badly like some others. I read all 4 of the main books (not book 1.5 or 2.5, which I felt great about even with my perfectionist tendencies) and mostly kept going through 3 and 4 because of the relationship storyline. I did get sick of the inevitable love triangle. Why does all of YA lit have to have love triangles? Can't we inject these books with drama using some other tool? In summation: easy read that wasn't overly mature in content or language but nothing to write home about.

This is one of my favorite books! I've read it at least four times. The characters in this book--Mr. Mcawber, Betsey Trotwood, Peggotty--are unforgettable. And I loved Dora and her dog Jip. What I learned from this book: don't live beyond your means and marry your best friend to have a happy marriage.

I almost broke down and wept as the pages ended. McCarthy's books are "for all and without distinction." The fullness and despair of life pours out from the pen of McCarthy in a worldview I on the whole disagree with, yet find I am compelled and find much truth. The Crossing is the second in the Border Trilogy and reaches farther in scope and excels in story than the first. There are some passages I will not forget.
