(The description attached to this book in Goodreads isn't really accurate, because the main character ISN'T drawn to the house by her own passion, really. Rachaela gets manipulated into most of her decisions throughout the book, and she doesn't seem to WANT anything, other than to be left alone and not bothered. Her motivations can be summed up as "I'm comfortable with how things are and I don't want them to be changed. Okay, things have changed and I'm comfortable with how they are NOW and I don't want them to be changed.") I think I'd describe this book as "trashy", but in a good way. It's very dark (naturally), with lots of gloomy descriptions and VERY flowery prose. I'm currently in the mood for dark books, so this works for me. Oh, and the "trashy" description comes from the fact the story is about an ancient, incestuous family trying to preserve their bloodline, and the only capable breeder in the family happens to be Rachaela's father. You tell ME how that's going to turn out.

In high school, I read Joyce's work, and never could fully appreciate it. So, I reread it this winter and discovered what an incredible writer he is, and how masterful he really is with words and sentence structure. I don't think I could write an entire book in a stream of conciousness like that.

It's really hard to rate Bel Ami. On one hand, I remained interested in the story. On the other hand, Georges and his bevy of beauties made me want to reach thru time the throttle the lot of them. I'm sure that this will make for a great discussion at our book club. The theme of attaining power from sexual frolics is as real today as it was then. I simply wish that Bel-Ami would have ended up face first in a gutter somewhere!

I wasn't a big fan of most the story lines, I disliked most of the characters, and I felt the "narrator" was too gimmicky. Overall, not her best.

I liked this book better than the first three, at the beginning. Maybe it's because there was a wedding and honeymoon. My husband (who has not read any of these books) made fun of me for not getting into the books until there was some sex. Well, excuse me for being human. The middle was totally like the book "Rosemary's Baby", where the main character was pregnant with Satan's baby. At least, that's what it reminded me of. That was freaky when Bella was pregnant. I started to get weirded out at the point. Then the end with the vampire fights and stuff seemed pretty much just like the other books. All was normal again. I didn't hate these books, but I never fell in love with them. It took me a long time to get through the last couple hundred pages. But now at least I am up on my pop culture. Congrats to me.

Blood Magic is the first of the Blood Journals Series, a series which I think those people who love their paranormal romance will devour. The best part about this book for me was the main characters and loved following their intertwined story. Silla is someone you really feel for because of all she has been through and Nick is just a little bit gorgeous. I loved how even their backstory was linked (even though they didn't know it) and enjoyed seeing how their relationship changed and developed as the story progress. I can't wait to see more of them in the next installment. I also loved Silla's brother Reese and really enjoyed seeing the relationship he had with his sister. From a story point of view I found tht intially I struggled to keep interest in what was going on as a lot of back story was covered to set up the series. However this changed once the plot started to thicken and the action really started to pick up. The final 100 pages are pretty much breakneck speed all the way through and it got to the point where I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. The scenes were very creepy and action packed. I liked how the author broke up the main story by adding diary extracts from an initally unknown character written well before the book takes place. These extraacts finally start to link to the main story and tied in really well. I liked how it was used by the author to both tie in and explain the backstory. As a bit of a warning for you squeamish girlies, some of the scenes with the blood letting much me cringe and I'm usually quite hardened to any gore. The book leaves you with quite a few questions with a lot of potentially awesome plotlines having been set in place for future novels. I am looking forward to seeing what the author does with them in the next installment.
