Although I really liked this book, I still have mixed feelings about why the story was split into two novels - neither of which can stand alone, but must be read together. I really do think a more tightly edited version topping out between 450 and 500 pages would have been a tighter package.

Ugh... took me half the book to get into it, and then, just as I was starting to get hooked, came the most horrific and violent scene, which caught me off guard and was another turn-off. The second half was much better, granted, but I really expected a LOT more after all the hype. Worst of all, my mother-in-law LOVED this book! Read all 3! Watched all 3 movies, with subtitles! WHAT?!?!

This was a good story and the end was a surprise to me which is always a bonus. I loved the romance and excitement of the Prohibition Era circus and can just imagine the excitement as it rolled into each town on it's journey. The behind the scenes parts of the book were gritty and realistic in the treatment and conditions of the animals and people in the circus.

This book had an interesting magical atmosphere, and while it was light it had an interesting story. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if it had fleshed out the characters more - I think it could have been much longer. There were a couple parts I didn't enjoy reading, but it was just my sensitivity to some of the content, such as (view spoiler). Overall an enjoyable light book.

I liked the style of this book. It starts out with a letter from Jimmy to the author, Nick Bruel, asking him to write a book about Jimmy's best friend, Melvin Bubble. Mr. Bruel, being a nice guy, does and interviews parents, friends, pets and more to answer the question Who is Melvin Bubble?
