I enjoyed this book, although at 639 pages, it felt a bit too long. It's historical fiction, set in lower Manhattan and Coney Island circa 1910 complete with gangsters and sideshow freaks and actual historical figures. The narrator follows a number of different characters as they cross paths with each other, and the story has a fantastic quality to it, which I always appreciate. My favorite passage: "She crept on into the apartment, where everyone else was asleep, her pallet lying already prepared for her in the kitchen. She did not lie down, though, but pulled out her battered copy of Dickens--bought secondhand from a pushcart peddler for ten cents--and tried to read for at least a little while by the oily glow of the kerosene lamp. She was dead tired, but she always tried to do something--anything--before she went to bed. Something every night, so that it would not be one more day with nothing accomplished, nothing earned except for someone else."

As a Murakami fan, this was a middle of the road book for me. While I was certainly compelled by the story, it didn't have the beautifully dreamy imagery of The Windup Bird Chronicle. On the flipside, it was a bit less obtuse than Hardboiled Wonderland and the Edge of the World. Read this if you enjoy metaphysical philosophy combined with Oedipal fatalism and a twist of pop-culture iconography. (I give away nothing by telling you that Colonel Sanders features in a significant way.)

A warm, engaging story that reads like a hybrid of chick lit and a script for a Richard Curtis movie such as Notting Hill or Love Actually. A beautiful cover!

Accidental Revolutionary says it best. The Cathedral and the Bazaar is a well known essay in the software dev. community, that O'Reily packaged into a book. The paper details the development of one of the earliest open source software projects and how the scope and functionality of the program grew as more and more people began to contribute and solve problems, all without a single cent being paid to anyone. Since this story took place this style of software development has blossomed to the point of being a substantial force in the software industry. Eric Raymond writes this in manifesto format, so it is more a series of rules and observations about how to harvest the community of computer geeks at large to create something that would be impossible without massive intellectual manpower. No Copyrights, no royalties, no proprietary bs. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Bill. Philanthropy is not dead.

This is a very competent novel. Straightforward prose, but really haunting imagery.

A very well-written account of the New Frontier politicians and Cold Warriors that pulled through Cuba, waged war on poverty, and ultimately bogged down in Vietnam. The portrayal of LBJ is especially effective.

Well worth reading, an intriguing story of survival and the human spirit. I appreciate that the author included a chapter detailing how the experience shaped the men for the remainder of their lives (all were under 30 at the time of the sinking). I was amazed that all of the men returned to whaling shortly after their rescue.
