At first I thought this book would be a good GHOST story and it turned out to be an ALIEN story. This book was so messed up. I liked it till the very end and then its like what the hell was the point of this whole thing. It was poorly written and that just added to the irritation not to mention how many times this damn book said okay. It held my attention cause I kept thinking this has to get better it just has to it didn't and in the end all the events just become jumbled words that left nothing but an air of "WHY DID I READ THIS DAMN BOOK"!

I read this book after I had read The Case For Israel because for my exhibition I also needed to know how Palestine's people felt about the conflict. The book was very similar to the previous book I had read, same format, very simple to read and was able to find all the information needed for my topic. Each question per chapter was presented with lots of evidence. It was great that I found this book because writing my exhibition paper would have been difficult with only Israeli's thoughts and nothing coming from the Palestinian side. I used the two books to compare the clashing ideas and incorporated the evidence into my paper.

What happened to this series? My sister Kerry got me started on these books, and while she always enjoyed them more than I have, at least they were interesting, if frustrating, mysteries. This latest installment---? The main characters barely appear, except for Peter, and he's gone boring. The mystery characters are a confusing bunch of would be musicians and music producers, almost impossible to keep straight, and completely impossible to really care about. The one interesting man, the mentally ill ex-band member who transforms into a functioning human being only when holding and playing his guitar gets short shrift indeed, and I, as the reader, was so disgusted as to fling the book aside at one point, wailing about why we should believe God cares what time of day we run the dishwasher??? I know, I know...don't disrespect a belief system you don't understand...What I do understand is when a really good writer lets a good series go flat, and starts coasting along on their reputation.

I've read this book twice now; and both experiences were very different but enjoyable. The first time I read it I thought the first 130 pages were unending agony! They were just so slow, I wanted something to happen, and finally on page 131 it did! After that it was a roller coaster, page turning, ride. It was fabulous and I loved it. Two years later, a book club that I participate in selected this book for our monthly read. I looked forward to rereading The Host with some trepidation. I didn't want to feel like banging my head against another wall through those first 100 pages. But something amazing happened. I didn't feel the same about those pages at all. It was just another layer of the story this time. And with that layer I was able to enjoy this story so much more then I was able to the first time. It was wonderful! The story starts with the Healer and his anxiety over placing a certain soul into this new host body. In the background there are whispers of other Souls talking about the one to be inserted, and with those whispers you get a vague impression of the main character. After insertion she struggles with the consciousness of the former person who inhabited her body. Its a struggle that's she's never dealt with before, and so she feels weak. She thinks the problem must be herself; but how could that be? Through each chapter you see how she changes and evolves, as well how she affects those around her. It was a wonderful journey. I recommend this book to anyone.

This book was sent to me by the author and it was an advance reader copy, some of the information included in the book may be changed before it is printed for full distribution. I think this book would speak to women who are Mom's. I don't have any children, and this author is writing about the changes that happened in her life once she married and eventually had 3 boys. She had to down size their living arranagements to avoid foreclosure. Each chapter speaks of a different area or time in her life. I'm sure anyone who has raised children would enjoy the book more than I did. I liked it, but it took me a while longer to finish the book than some that I read. Here is the excerpt from the back of the book: Introducing a writer with a keen eye, a wicked tongue, and an appealing take on family. In the family of Jen Lancaster and Elizabeth Gilbert, Kyran Pittman is the laid-back middle sister: warm and witty and confiding, with an addictively smart and genuine voice-but married with three kids and living in the heartland. Relatable and real, she writes about family in a way that highlights all its humor, while at the same time honoring its depth. A regular contributor to Good Housekeeping, Pittman is well loved because she is funny and honest and self-deprecating, because her own household is in chaos ("semi-domesticated"), and because she inspires readers in their own domestic lives. In these eighteen linked, chronological essays, Pittman covers the first twelve years of becoming a family, writing candidly and hilariously about things like learning to maintain a marriage over time; dealing with the challenges of sex after childbirth; saying good-bye to her younger self and embracing the still attractive, forty-year-old version; and trying to "recession- proof" her family (i.e., downsize to avoid foreclosure). From a fresh new talent, celebrating the joys and trials of a new generation of parents, Planting Dandelions is an entertaining tribute to choosing the white-picket fence over the other options available, even if you don't manage to live up to its ideals every day.

This book is about communism, but what it really feels like is everyday America. Control, lies, corruption and fear, all the right engrdients for a hardy American soup. I am very excited to find an author that puts such subject to good use.

A wonderful read - the book brought me from London to Tel Aviv and Vienna, and from the past to the now, with topics that define our time: migration, the longing for political change, the dream of creating a better world/society. The novel also made me learn things i didn't know - it made me go and look up themes, times, follow topics mentioned. I blogged about it after reading the first half, here: http://virtual-notes.blogspot.com/201...

On the fictional island of Nollop, Nevin Nollop's tomb is tiled with the pangram "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." The tiles begin to fall from the tomb and the governing council takes this as a message fromm Nollop from beyond the grave: they must excise that letter from their lives. Ella Minnow Pea was a fantastic book club choice. It's short but full of really interesting ideas. Ella Minnow Pea is a a satire in the tradition of George Orwell's Animal Farm and can lead to discussion about totalitarianism, superstition, censorship, and community. I kept thinking about the communication while I read this book, and how essential communication and community is to our humanity. As more and more restrictions are placed upon these characters it becomes harder and harder for them to communicate with one another and harder and harder for them to hold onto their humanity. Some manage to do so and others do not.
