J. M. Coetzee's pseudo-novel, "Diary of a Bad Year," is almost, but not really, once you accept his concretismo terms of writing, irritating to read. He sections off each page into three vantage points of view by the three main characters. The first section on the pages is the typed manuscript of the author's, (thinly disguised as Coetzee, himself), "Strong Opinions," comprising all subjects from "01. -On the Origins of the State," through "24. -On Dostoevsky." The second section on the pages is the voice of the erotic, yet compassionate, downstairs neighbor, a Filipina woman named Anya, whom the aging author hires to type his manuscript. The third section on each page concentrates on the relationship Anya has with her live-in lover, Alan, who gradually and predictably becomes jealously obsessed with Anya's daily meetings with the famous, old author upstairs. Alan tries unsuccessfully to engage Anya in a plot to steal the old man's money. Anya refuses to accomodate Alan's avaricious greed and leaves him, once the manuscript is finished. She winds up quite liberated after the experience of being honored by the old author's attentions and his literary works over the period of time she works for him. Alan, by contrast, remains full of sour grapes, and can only find fault with the author's work on every envious level imaginable. It took me awhile to enjoy the book. After all, I had just read the epic masterpiece by Roberto Bolano, "2666," and had to adjust my expectations to the different, more insular and almost parable-like work of Coetzee in the "Diary of a Bad Year." The three-tiered arrangement of the novel is both clever and poignant, making clear the differences among face-to-face communications, the exchanges behind one's back, and the words that eventually wind up being published, in German no less, without the back stories.

The ruler has sent her cousin Amonked to inspect the fortresses along the Belly of Stones with the purpose of closing them and removing the army. Everyone from the Commander Thuty down to the lowest peasant is horrified by the thought. When Amonked arrives with ships laden with unbelievable finery he seems just another bureaucrat whose mind is already made up, unimpressed by what he sees and unwilling to listen to reason. Against advice, he plans to haul all the luxuries, including his beautiful concubine, along with him across the desert. Despite rumors of the return of a desert bandit, Amonked refuses Commander Thuty’s offer of guards, claiming that his own troops are enough, despite the fact that they have neither faced combat or the desert. But as the caravan leaves Buhen, the body of a local prince is discovered and it appears that someone in Amonked’s party killed him. Thuty uses the murder as an excuse to send Bak and Nebwa with 20 bowmen along. Thuty’s confidence that Bak will find the killer seems misplaced as the long hot days pass and he is no closer to uncovering the killer. But he and Nebwa face graver concerns as it becomes clear that the threat of the desert bandit is not just a rumor, but fact. He plans to attack and they are vastly outnumbered. I like Bak was kept in the dark as to who the killer was, partially because like he, I came to like all the characters as they face the challenges of the desert and the threat of attack. In many ways it was the story of the wagon train harassed by the hostile Indians, an exciting adventure. The best so far in the series, I think. My Thoughts: I really wanted to love this, I did. I had heard really good things about it, and I thought I would love it. We are introduced to Aimee who has red hair and is pretty smart. She lost her mother a while ago. She lives with her grandpa, father, and little brother Benji. Than we meet Alan. Alan has just moved to town with his mother to live with his aunt. His aunt (and cousin Courtney and Aimee's best friend) has just lost her husband and they are trying to get by. Alan and his mom move to town to help out. Alan is Native American. Aimee and Alan meet and instantly click. Aimee has a boyfriend named Blake who she dumps pretty quick after meeting Alan. Alan is kind of like a spirit warrior and when Courtney becomes possessed he steps in to help her out. The person doing the possessing is a man who has acquired the name, The River Man. Of course, this isn't all that is happening. There is also the issue of the Cheeto, which made me laugh so hard. I loved it! I liked the alternation between chapters. It is told in both Aimee's and Alan's point of view. I liked how each one picked up right where the other left off. The book was a fast enough read, but I just didn't find myself getting too into it or really caring about the characters. I never really connected to Aimee or Alan. And I didn't like how quickly she dumped her boyfriend Blake, they had been going out for years than all of a sudden he's out of the picture. It just came too sudden after feeling an attraction to Alan. I really liked Aimee's family though. I loved the scenes with her funny grandpa and her adorable brother Benji. After Obsession was an okay read. I flew through the story, but just couldn't really connect very well. Overall: The plot was okay but I just didn't feel myself really into it. I did finish the book and it was ok. The writing was ok. The folk lore was ok. I just didn't really connect to the story or the characters. Hopefully you'll enjoy it more than me. Cover: Really beautiful cover. It's what sparked my interest to begin with. Love how she is leaning back. Very pretty. What I'd Give It: 3/5 Cupcakes _________________________________ Review Based On Hardcover Edition Taken From Princess Bookie www.princessbookie.com
