I liked this better the second time around, actually, because I remember the first time being really annoyed by the midget--sorry, little person--character. Once I got around the fact that he's annoying, he actually became quite funny, and his running judgment of Stephanie's mishaps was very sadly hilarious; also, the idea that you never leave blood behind (even if you don't like them at all) rings very true to my upbringing, and reading the family politics around that was much funnier because I heard so many echoes of my own mother and grandmother. Ah, family. They make you much crazier than firebombs or the Mafia.

Too old for this. I came to America at 11 also and pretty much learned English then. But this story is not about this, it's a fucking cliche filled fantastical story. There is so much to explore without going to the egregious scenarios.

I've actually read the UK edition, called The Rebel Sell, which is a much cooler title, I think. Rebel Cell, Billy Idol, and whatnot. This book seems pretty right on to me. I found it a little simplistic, though, and I wish the authors had done a little more reporting at times. Seems to me mostly to be a primer on social thought, along with some history, economics and a bit of common sense aimed at college students and hipster-types who don't know very much. Which is a noble project, I guess, and the authors did create an illuminating synthesis of their ideas. Really made me want to read Veblen and other people in the American tradition of sociology.

Interesting book about cotton farming, race, and the Mississippi Delta. Author follows a farmer through one growing season, which happens to coincide with hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A little too much detail on the many, many machines involved in growing, harvesting, and ginning cotton.
