I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read many books about fairies...but I'm no stranger to ogres and trolls. This book had all of those and more. I felt like it got off to a bit of a slow start and, in the beginning, the main character seemed a little bit naive and dim for my tastes. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well her character, as well as the others, devoloped as the story progressed. The story follows Ethywyne, the only fairy to mother a youngling in the past 14 years, and her protectors as she evades beings of darkness that are hell-bent on capturing Ethywyne and her child...and destroying the rest of fairykind along the way. Ethywyne and her protector make their way to the castle of the Queen, who is their only hope for survival of their race and protection for the future of all fairies. The story has everything...love, betrayal, adventure, merriment, destruction, and hope.

Jadi pengen baca versi jepangnya langsung... tapi ga mungkin ya kayanya. Salah satu yang gw inget, prinsip Musashi: Awalnya dia berprinsip " saya tidak akan menyesali apa yang telah saya lakukan" Setelah banyak peristiwa dia berprinsip " saya tidak akan melakukan sesuatu yang akan saya sesali"

This book should have been so much better. It deserved much better than two stars, definitely, but I could not bring myself to give it. I'll explain why at the end. The story was excellent and engaging. It wasn't a cookie-cutter style, it didn't leave the reader all warm and fuzzy in the end, just like you expected when you picked it up with it's bright, happy cover. In the way that it represented the lives of the characters, it was a success and would well fit into the category of YAL. The book does not try to force a stance on the reader, or push the reader to categorize everything with neat labels. It puts the situations out there for the reader to see and hides nothing. A young reader would not feel insulted by being led around the ideas of the story. This book would certainly appeal to younger readers for its veracity and daring. It paints a vivid picture of the hardships of urban youths, which would be relatable to many, and intriguing to others. Because of the content, I would recommend this book to older teens and be sure that other resources were available to them. At the very least, that their parents were aware of the book and available to discuss it with them. As for teaching it in a classroom, I cannot see this as an appropriate academic piece. Content aside, there isn't anything of literary significance that can be gained here that can't be gained elsewhere equally well without the potential for parental objections. Now, for the reason I gave this book only two stars. The voice in the story is completely wrong. The narrator and protagonist, Ponyboy, is an adolescent male, but this story is dripping with obvious feminine tone and diction. It simply does not fit the story, the character, or the intent. From the very first page to the last, I simply could not reconcile the voice with the story, and it ruined it.

Nice story. I learned a lot about owls, a bird I've always admired. I found the author's committment to Wesley remarkable. She devoted so many years of her life to her friend, this bird. She couldn't date or have other people in her room. Wesley imprinted on her as a baby and then decided she was his mate. He tried to feed her and was very devoted to her. I loved the photos throughout. I agree with the author that Wesley's eyes spoke. Beautiful bird. Worth reading.

The aftermath of hurricane Katrina are dark days for Sookie and her friends. Members of the Shreveport Were pack are being murdered and everything is building up to wolf against wolf unless Sookie can get them to actually talk to each other. With the vampire Queen of Louisiana weak and vulnerable, the state is ripe for a bloody takeover by another ruling vampire monarch - Navada. Her boyfriend Quinn, the weretiger, is missing, and her ex, Bill, isn't giving up. And Sookie meets an unusual relative she never knew she had, and another who has more in common with her than anyone else: telepathy. Unlike the previous book, All Together Dead, and a few of the others - the better ones - in this series, From Dead to Worse has no Big Plot or cohesive structure to it. There are a few like this in the series, that read more like filler and are lighter on the mystery and action side. Not that plenty doesn't happen here, or that it isn't enjoyable. But it is shorter, and more scattered, which I didn't enjoy as much. It's a book of endings and beginnings, and Sookie is no closer to finding peace and happiness in a sharing relationship than she's ever been - it almost got me depressed. On the up side, Eric now remembers everything that happened when he was under the witch's curse and has taken to calling Sookie "lover" - but I'm no longer sure that he's a real candidate for Sookie. It could end up being Bill after all. Though really, I don't see how it could work. Sookie is, after all, human, and deserving of a human partner and a family of her own. It'd be sad if she got anything less. But there is the telepathy thing, which puts limitations on the relationships she can have with plain ol' humans. There was a small development towards the end of the previous book which was strangely ignored in this one: Sookie found she could hear a vampire's thoughts (which would immediately put her life in danger if the vamps found out but was a truly interesting development). Usually Harris is very good about making brief reminders or catch-ups with these plot developments, since so much happens in the details, but at least twice Sookie clearly states she can't hear vampires' thoughts, with no mention of something that had really freaked her out before. Did I just read too much into it? It's hard to see how.

This book was ok, but it's not memorable. I had heard an interview with Melanie Benjamin and was interested in the story she had to tell about the woman who inspired the famous Alice in Wonderland, but this book did not live up to my expectations.

This is one of those books which is a delight to read cover to cover upon first discovering it, and which is like a comforting bath to re-read periodically. Both calming and refreshing, it will renew you on your mothering journey. There are many "ah-ha" moments and for me it serves to remind and reinforce me that I am on the right path. I love the reflective quality of her writing style as well as how she offers guidance and suggestions for parenting, without making you feel hopeless or that you are doing things wrong with your current path. Her tone is both comforting and reassuring. This is truly one of my favorite books. (by the way, don't let the title deceive you, this is not a religious book, but it is definitely spiritual in nature, people of any or no religious affiliation can enjoy it)
