I don't think Ellen Hopkins was trying to insult any religion. Pattyn and her family didn't have to be Mormon. It could have been any other belief, but that isn't what matters. It's the message Ellen is telling us. No matter what religion you follow, you can still be harmful or harmed. Pattyn was a realistic character that I could relate to. As she headed into adolescence and opened her eyes to literature, she questioned her religion, her family, and herself. When her father destroyed the first high school romance she thought she'd ever have, Pattyn couldn't hold it in anymore. Her reckless behavior resulted in imprisonment on her aunt Jeanette's ranch in Nevada. There, she found acceptance and love. When she had to go back home, her father abused her and life went back to how it was. Except then things got worse. I understand how Pattyn can be irresponsible sometimes, but she's a teenager. She's supposed to be like that. She's supposed to be able to occasional scream out her emotions. You know what's wrong though? No matter what Pattyn said or did, her parents were supposed to love her and care for her. Instead, her father beat her. I pitied Pattyn for her beatings and inability to speak out her true feelings to anyone, and when I finished reading this book, I shivered. Pattyn needed freedom, confidence, and, most of all, love. In Nevada, her aunt gave her that. At home, her parents didn't. I am ashamed at these type of people. Hopkin's elegant and beautiful prose made it too easy to read, and it took less than a day to have this one devoured. The feelings between Ethan and Pattyn are beautiful, but that doesn't make Burned a happy ending. This was a magnificent book and I would reread it over and over again. I applaud. waiting for the next installment...

A really good book for those who are interested in the paranormal and research dealing with hauntings. You can tell there is a lot of research that went into this. I am a fan of the paranormal shows and this deals with a girl whose parents have a show. Her mom is a catholic and father an atheist. A girl by the name of Jordin wants Maia to take her to all these haunted places and be her tour guide. A lot of paranormal things happen and suddenly Jordin dissapears. Derek Jordins fiance goes with Maia to look for her. Jordin and Derek have these dreams in which all they could hear is that The Nightmare is Coming. After the dream Maia has this symbol on her neck. They find out that these people take their souls and make them into ghosts. Derek and Maia goes and finds Jordin at this office building which she is in a room with the symbols in the room. She explains she is held there under control that the symbols are controlling them and wherever the symbols are they can't do anything to get out. Derek finds a way to help Maia and Jordin out and Maia breaks one of the symbols while the entity is in the room. The entity disappears and they are al saved.

I learned that William Gibson is definitely more than just the icon who wrote Neuromancer. I also learned that carryover suspicions from the cold war, viral advertising, and a kick-butt heroine that you root for from beginning to end make for a compelling read. The story bounces between New York, Tokyo, London and somewhere in Russia (can't remember at the moment). More lucid and hopefully entertaining review to follow at a later date. ^_^

I think the base idea of this book is a good one. There were parts I really liked and there were parts I really didn't. I felt like there were huge gaps where I didn't understand why something was happening. I felt like the relationship between Trevin and Melaia was weird, not realistic. I didn't feel any connection between them. There were so many characters that I didn't get a chance to feel connected to any of them, even though I wanted to. I read a lot of books so I guess in comparison, this book just fell short for me. All the right ideas were there, I think, it was just how it all came together that didn't work for me.

This was a very complex book, adult more than YA - an interesting take on relationships and divorce. The story was believeable even when the three sisters go on their "quest"...Not sure if teens would appreciate the first person inserts that are interwoven with the story, but they rang true for me in my 40's. Good read, especially if you have divorced parents. I really liked this.

i love David Cross. but this book was a test of that love. David is great, but let's be honest; he's not Bill Hicks. Goat Boy could give you his actual frustration - REAL rage - but still make it *funny*. that's the key. there was a lot of funny stuff in this book, don't get me wrong. there was just WAY too much entirely not funny stuff. anger is funny, not always.

Reading this book was alternately frustrating and charming. Frustrating because the author, despite her apparent wide travels, seems to have given little thought to how the Depression may have been experienced by those who did not grow up self-sufficient on a ranch, and charming because so many of the stories were familiar to me from my own Eastern Oregon ranching family. I had no idea "from scratch" maple syrup (sugar, water, and Mapleine flavoring) was common anywhere outside of my own family, and the memory of my aunt's enormous garden and summer canning is still vivid.
