Interesting memoir about a woman whose husband cheated on her and how she came to discover it and deal with the unraveling of her marriage. What keeps the book from being wholly mopey is that the author has a keen awareness of her own faults in both her marriage and in her friendships. She talks often about her own neediness, for example, and she's self-deprecating at times--she's very likable, and as she says, people tell her she writes good emails, so she must be a good writer. Recommended if you want a book that takes, at most, two days to read and has an interesting topic.

** spoiler alert ** This would be a 3 3/4 stars. I enjoyed this story and found myself very involved and wanting more. The characters were endearing and easy to sympathies with. The author obviously had some very strong feminist ideas about marriage and the belief that it takes away freedoms, which I very much disagree with. It's not marriage itself that's a prison, rather it's holding onto a bad relationship and then binding it legally that's makes a prison. That's another whole subject of its own and only one point of view is presented on the subject leaving the other completely undefended. Oh well, it's her story and her views. My favorite parts of this book were probably the fights. I also loved Po and Katsa's conversations when she uses her mind to talk to him. It was still a fun book to read and it was refreshing that this book, like so many modern books I've read lately didn't turn into an environmentalist book, what a relief!

Incredibly concise and beautifully written narrative history of Britain from pre-Roman times to pre WW2. Some antiquated sentiments verging on authoritarian eg that the feudal serf was better off despite his servitude because his lord made the world a more stable place. But striking, vivid images eg the victorious Saxons who refused to live in abandoned Roman villas meaning that for "some centuries, the Roman ruins must have stood as a familiar a sight as the roofless abbeys under the Stuart Kings, a useful stone quarry sometime by day, but at night haunted in the imagination of the Saxon peasant by the angry ghosts of the races that his forefathers had destroyed."

Imagine how it must feel to receive a box full of cassette tapes addressed to you from a person who was supposed to be dead. Then imagine listening to those tapes and hearing that you received them because you were somehow involved in said person's death. Then imagine how you would feel a rush of joy when you listen and a particular tape is not about you while simultaneously feeling anxious and nervous for your name to come up. It's kind of eerie, right? Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why is able to evoke that emotion very well in this novel. There is just the right amount of suspense and mystery to balance out the large themes of teen bullying and suicide, which were admittedly, at times a bit heavy-handed. However, it is for that reason, though, that I can see this book being helpful because it does teach that being mindful of others around you is important. The format of Hannah's narrative being told through cassette tapes alternating with Clay's, the protagonist, own thoughts as he listens to Hannah's tapes keeps the pages turning. I really enjoyed the format and I particularly liked the use of old-fashioned tapes as a medium for the story. The story itself is written in a way that is simple and easy to understand and I had trouble putting it down. I started in the evening and 6 or so hours later I had finished the mystery of Hannah Baker's mysterious cassette tapes. This is definitely a fast, easy, read that I think most would enjoy. What's even cooler? You can listen to bits of Hannah's tapes yourself if you go to the link of the youtube channel printed on the back cover of the book!

This is a modern day Sleeping Beauty story that doesn't end when he wakes her up, instead the couple struggles to get to know each other and their cultures, which are hundreds of years apart. They must learn how to love and support each other in trials and danger and how to make marriage work. I enjoyed this book for the Russian folklore and unique twist on a common fairy tale. But it was slow going at first and took a while to get into. The overall plot was a bit weak and too many things I had to accept without adequate explanation, and the hasty ending was unsatisfying.
